Has anyone thought that a Ds III isn't out at the same time because it too would be a new technology?
The new III has the same pixel size as the current Ds, which means that unless the Ds has an even smaller pixel size, it will still be the same resolution as the Mk II Ds. While low light capability might be better, having a new camera with the same MP as the previous one, while it is true that the race shouldn't be MP, but that is how cameras are first compared by the general public. I would release that camera as a 1Ds Mk IIN.
Plus there is the issue of the current sensors being more sensitive than the old 35mm EF lens mount can resolve without major changes or 82mm front elements. Kind of like the rumor that Canon is planning a new mount.
Do you think Canon wants to coordinate the release, marketing and sales of two major upgrades to both of their 1-series cameras at the same time? And force professionals to split up their cash on what they want to buy at the moment?
Considering that the 1DsII has no peer at the moment, Canon's perfectly happy to let the 1DIII have the limelight to itself, milk all the sales they can get out of it, and rest assured, once the furor dies down, and anyone can waltz in Joe Schmoe's Camera Shack and pick up a 1DIII, Canon will be more than happy to spring the 1DsIII on the unsuspecting masses!
Really... all this hand wringing, arm-flapping and conspiracy theory spewing is just silly.
If you want a break from the pages and pages of speculation from no one who knows anything, here's some info that I haven't seen listed here, in particular the "Shooter's Insight":
My local dealer has been told by his Canon rep that he will be getting one camera next week (which he will use as a demo unit), followed by two more units at the end of May (which are scheduled to go to me). The next shipment will be June sometime or later.
Those of you in Aus, unless you are at the top of your lists, you probably won't see a 1D Mark III for another five weeks at least.

My dealer in Melbourne told me the same thing and he is getting one unit next week which will be used as demo units and the next shipment in couple of weeks time.
hello everyone ,i live in grecce and my eos 1 d mkIII will be here next week.i m sending this because all this time every day and night reading everything at this forum and i think you want to know.
I don't think there is anything odd about them not releasing a 1Ds III at this point, the release cycle is simply following exactly the same pattern as previously:
1D II - Jan 04
20D - Aug 04
1Ds II - Sep 04
5D - Aug 05
30D - Feb 06
Now the next round starts with:
1D III - Feb 07
So we can reasonably expect:
40D - Aug 07
1Ds III - Oct 07
6D? 3D? Can't guess as the 5D is really the first of its kind, so we don't know what sort of lifecycle Canon will adopt for it. My guess is it will be somewhere between the 18 months of the 20D/30D and the 3 years of the 1 series, so perhaps Aug 07 will see it replaced.
I remember when the 1D II came out, a lot of people bought one who really would have been better served by waiting for a 1Ds II or 20D. The question I see is "Do you need 10fps?". If yes, get a 1D III, if not, then consider which will be the best camera for your needs once the current round of upgrades has been completed.

And waaaay more people who bought 1D2 bodies found that the 5D was the camera they were looking for and didn't know it....
