beewee: Any ideas on availability some concrete pricing yet?

Nothing really new. Most of the stores in Canada will charge C$5500 for 1D mkIII although the range is C$5400-C$5700. The problems is that the delivery will be in June and very limited. It is supposed to be available in a couple of weeks in Britain and at the end of May in the US.

I was in NYC yesterday at B&H, getting some other stuff, and asked the gentleman helping me about the MKIII. He said he didn't know when, but when they do come in, they go the warehouse first. And if the demand is there, they just go right out from the warehouse and the store doesn't even see them. I said it was on my wish list on the web site and there was a link where you would have B&H notify you when it's in. He said, as soon as you get that email.. order it!!
Came back home, tried doing the link... demand too great, they were taking no more names. ARGHHHH I knew I should have done that long ago. Food for thought.

It doesn't matter. On new high demand items like this, the first couple of shipments go out the door before they ever send you the "it's available" e-mail. The only way to get something like this in the first wave from B&H is to happen to be checking stock online when it goes up and get your order in before they're gone. That's how I happened to get my first Mark II, the day they came in.

The good news in this is it means there's opportunity for those who aren't already on a waiting list somewhere.

Damn Nill you let the cat out of the bag. This is how I got my 1DMKII when it was released.

There is a plus to B&H not having a waiting list if your diligent and fast on the order button.

Someone should write a script to automatically check their email every minute and as soon as it gets that email from B&H, automatically place an order :P.

Or, if you live in Canada and are a CPS member and have a good relationship with your local dealer it probably won't be an issue to get a camera early on.

Come to think of it, that could be another reason for priority fulfillment of Mark III orders for CPS members in Canada - to diminish the value/temptation of cross border shopping. I know I won't be...

I'm #5 on the list at The Camera Store in Calgary but that doesn't mean much since no one has stock in North America. On the upside, after blowing some big coin on the 16-35/II, it'll be nice to have a month or two to give my credit card a little rest before doing more damage. :P

Got my first "hands-on" at PMA in Melbourne on Friday. A noticeably lighter camera (than my 1Ds). Very comfortable in use.

Regarding delivery, Canon rep said "Next two or three weeks. Definitely before the end of May." He then went on to say that they had 400 on back order but there wouldn't be 400 in the first shipment...

Saw a D3 at Henry's show in Toronto yesterday. Not much to add, but it doesn't look like the L plates for the earlier 1's are going to fit (I took my RRS with me). Seems like the socket is a couple of mm closer to the rear than the earlier bodies.

Which socket? I just possibly may still get a 1D3 before an event in June, but I'm sure the RRS L bracket won't be out in time. If I can get a "loaner" 1DN MarkII to fit that might be good. I don't need the wi-fi socket or the flash sync to clear (although the flash sync would be a bonus), just the remote switch RS-80N3. I should also mention that the L plate may wind up on the B-150-B focusing rail-but that would be harder to figure.

The tripod socket - it's not actually possible to screw the bracket into the base- access to the side connectors seemd ok, but the RRS L is quite offset in portrait mode. I have a small generic plate that might hold me over.

CPS price will probably be less then US retail anyways.

Unfortunately, being a CPS member in the good old USA will get you nothing in the way of a discount or priority shipment. I did borrow a 1Ds MKII from CPS to try out last month but decided I would still prefer the 1D MKIII. Too slow to focus and the 1Ds copy I borrowed had a definite banding problem. Not really conducive to selling them, I say. Oh well.
I have an old D60 mounting plate that works quite well for a temp. I used it on the 1Ds. Only one side is curved so it may fit the MKIII. My RRS MKII L-plate will be going up for sale at the same time as the MKII this summer. Looks to me like it will be difficult to build an L-plate that will work with all the connectors (WiFi, etc.) on the LH side of the MKIII. Good luck to the vendors. They have their work cut out for them. I think the new L-brackets will be at least three months behind the new cameras. I don't remember how long it took on the MkII.

It appears that the Canon U.S. webpage on the Mark 3 has undergone a subtle change today. There are several active tabls (folders) at the top of the page. The "Drivers and Downloads" tab is however, not active. Might it mean that something (shipping perhaps) is going to occur this week?

Interesting. Someone on DPReview is saying the 1D MK III is ALREADY on sale in Hong Kong, where this person is located. He has seen it, it's not just a rumour.

Cheers.

Well, DigitalRev (HK) are announcing to have it in stock the 1DMkIII by May 15th

http://www.digitalrev.com/en/article.php?article_id=170

but at what price !! 3.705€ + 16% VAT = 3.705 + 592,80 + 55 (S/H) = 4.362,35€
That΄s about $ 5.890

Here in EU is about . !! 3.670€ VAT incl --->> 700€ cheaper !!

Well maybe they plan on shipping this week to dealers. Who knows why they made the changes to the site?

Personally though I wouldn't expect downloads and drivers on line until after a product has shipped for some time.

I mean, who would lose their software CD in the first two weeks (and that doesn't matter since Canon's downloads usually require that you have a former version of the software installed first).

I can understand not having the manual until it ships - don't want to release too much info. I have ?? that will probably only be answered after it ships.

Like I'm guessing that the ISO safety shift completely overrules ISO H/L settings, so if you use safety shift, you can't use 6400, but I don't think safety shift will work in P or M just Av and Tv. So why wouldn't those modes be able to use it along with safety shift? Just have to try it when I get it.

Also - why do they have a battery charger with only one battery included but spots for two batteries - and the Canon USA page doesn't even list a battery as an accessory? Are they having manufacturing problems with the batteries I haven't been able to find the battery online anywhere for purchase, esp Adorama or B&H.
