I've held one at an exhibition. Did not take any pictures, just tried the live view a bit. It is slow to switch to live view. AF was fast and excellent with 24-70/2.8L.

Dust Cleaning Question
I haven't had a chance to go through all 117 pages of this thread, so I'll just throw out this question.

The self cleaning system obviously sounds great. I've seen the animation of it working where the element in front of the CMOS will 'vibrate' to shake off the dust. When the dust falls off the sensor, obviously it will still collect inside the camera. Is there a 'sticky' or something to catch the dust that will eventually be sitting and gathering?

Also, just saw B&H is saying May availability....so far away

I don't really plan on relying on the dust system so it will be a bulb and swab for me.

Read page 14 of white paper. They use "absorbent material" to catch the dust. Oylmpus had something similar I think.

Thanks Jim.

I suppose the aborbent material (or infrared-absorption glass) will need to be cleaned or maintained eventually over time.

The dust "sticky" only needs to work until the MkIV comes out

I went to WPPI today. The 1D3 is still a totally sweet camera.

That is all.

Oh - the rep said positively no cameras available in April, maybe early May and for sure mid-May. Price $4500. I told her that was two wrong answers, as far as I was concerned. I asked if they were still tweaking the firmware or something, and She said they are stocking the pipeline right now, but no sales until enough cameras are distributed.

When are we going to see a total re design of the SLR,.. the old mechanical limitations to the body design are gone, we don't hold rolls of film anymore... Why on earth do I still need to twist my neck in an awkard position with my greasy nose on the display?
Give me a view finder on the side of the body. Yeah I know,.. you can turn the camera in portrait mode and that is exactly my point!,.. why not use a square sensor so we can digitally swap the modes?.. Free us from the "OLD" formats already.

One guy from Japan has confirmed shipping date for an order for the 1D MkIII by May 31 in Japan (Late May at Canon Japan Official site). It means it should be at Late May /beginning June in dealers. Street Price around 450.000 yens = $3.840 . Manufacturer capacity = 5.000 units per month.

Market watch in Japan: Price oscillates between 440.000-498.000 yens = $3.750-$4.250

I have to agree. I'm on the waiting list for one, but not for $4500. Now I'm thinking I'll wait at least until fall and reconsider.

I am having second thoughts as well. I will make up my mind tomorrow. I resent being misled.

Sorry to be so late to the party. Is $4500 a surprise? That's what the original Mark II sold for as I recall. I'd have thought $4500 (or more) was what everyone was expecting for this body?

Ditto for me too. I was having a hard time justifying it at 4k and now at 4.5k I don't think so. I'm also miffed that the original price was 4k and then they retracted the price.

I don't get it.. what are you excited about? You can get a better camera that works properly with 35mm lenses for less money, its called a 5D. Hands up how many of you work for sports illustrated and need the 10fps.. Nuff said.

Daniel.
