David: I sold my 30D (used to be my primary birding body) as soon as this thing was announced, and also because I was afraid a 40D would be announced at PMA. Damn!

Talking to Jody at Roberts Imaging, says Canon is supposed to ship in highly limited quantity near the end of May. If you're not real early on the list, July is what to hope for. Supposedly all the pros are upgrading so all newspapers, magazines, Getty, etc. are getting the bluk of the first shipment. Ughhh!

It's bad enough that I'll miss spring bird migration but July means missing Formula 1 in June.

This really sucks. I listed my 1D2N the day the 1DIII was announced and sold it the next morning. I also sold my 16-35L and pre-ordered the 1DIII and the new lens, but if i have to wait until July for a replacment it is going to be a lousy spring/summer!!

I think that there are many of us potentially left without decent camera for spring. I am actually shooting film again.

I talked with The Camera Store yesterday and they said pricing will most likely be less than $5500cdn and they will be one of the first, if not the very first store (at least in canada and possibly in north america) to have it in store.

I should note that Rob Galbraith is a consultant for The Camera Store so I don't know if there's any correlation between their affiliation with Rob Galbraith and their ability to get priority on orders.

I have a special photo workshop trip at the very end end of April, so I am also hoping for a timely release of the 1DmkIII. I am hoping I can repeat my luck I had with my 5D, where I got a very early one just 5 days before a major photo trip, and really enjoyed it. I am number one for a 1DmkIII at the same local store that came through for me before, so we shall see. I would never sell any camera ahead of time, so I will be covered with my "old" cameras OK if the mkIII does not make it in time. Still, it would really be nice. In additon to most of the obvious mkIII improvements, I am really looking forward to live view for tripod mounted landscapes, including with tilt shift lenses. Exact framing preview, accurate focus inspection anywhere in the frame both at maximum and stopped down aperature, and accurate depth of field preview inspection, all combine to make a live view 35 mm a little bit more like a classic view camera. Actually, stopped down viewing may end up better than a real view camera, because the mkIII cranks up the gain of the sensor in low light.

It is a little tricky to plan for support of my current cameras and the possible new 1DmkIII on a 10 day trip away from AC power, with 2 old battery types and the new mkIII battery type. In additon, even if I get a mkIII in time, I have no way to know if I would be able to get extra batteries right away. I am hoping that the new batteries will also be available early, because most pro users would not go anywhere with out an extra one. I am also gearing up for 82mm filter size for the 16-35 mk II, even though I have no way to know when it will get here either.

this is very uneducated thought that just went through my head....
at first glance the new 1D3 battery looks exactly like the Nikon D2 x/h battery
not the part that couples to the body (which is removable) but the actual battery pack, I wonder if its the same unit.... I wonder if the power delivery contacts are in the same place... I wonder if you can use D2x batteries with the Canon mount in a canon and vise versa....
like I said just a thought.... if anyone knows better let me know.... but looking at the pictures it's funny how similar they look...

The review on the Image-resourcing site indicated that the both the Canon and Nikon batteries are manufactured by the same company. No indication though whether or not they are interchangeable.

after 2 years it is still working fine

I am not sure if it is completely credible but I was told today at the Canadian store where I pre-ordered that 1DIII will be available in April and the price should be finalized next week. Unfortunately, I was also told that the price (for me) is probably going to go up to C$5600

Was that from The Camera Store or was that from another place that you also have your name on?

I do buy at The Camera Store but I pre-ordered at Lozeau (in Montreal) this time. I have been watching their prices and they have been better than the Camera Store lately. I have been very happy with Lozeau as far as my previous purchases were concerned. I have to admit that C$5600 may be above my limit though.
