I'm curious as to how many GPS satellites you were able to track while in antarctica as the performance and number of GPS satellites that are visible are much lower than in the mid latitudes due to inclination of the GPS satellite orbit. Just from a quick calculations, GPS satellites at the south pole will only reach as high as 49 degrees from the horizon. Also, most if not all GPS receivers will filter out satellites below 15 degrees from the horizon due to poor radio signal travelling throught the ionosphere.
I don't remember, and I don't really care. Precision of 100m is more than sufficient for this kind of work, and I'd gamble to say that it would be good enough for the vast majority of applications.

Oh well, there is still the hope that something will come from Canon a week to 10 days before the show, or maybe at the SuperBowl. Its hard to imagine Canon not wanting to have new products and lots of press for their 70th, and the EOS systems' 20th
It wouldn't surprise me if they are beta-testing at the superbowl.
Two embargo dates are being considered: Feb 20 - if Canon decides to take part in UK's Focus in Imaging trade show which opens on Feb 25 in London. As of now, Canon has yet to confirm participation at Focus show.
March 1 - 7 days away from PMA Show 2007's opening.
We are going to hear officially from Canon either on Feb 20 or March 1 onwards!
For those who are wondering, I found out this from a tecnical writer from my local newspaper's IT-tech section, who is being assigned to cover Focus at end of Feb.
(no I don't read Chinese... but it looks like a 800mm f/5.6 DO IS USM.)
APology Accepted
Would be fun to see that lens come to fruition but the too bad the poor schlep that pulled this together lacks in the Photoshop department, otherwise we might at least for a moment start to drool.
Click the word "English" in the upper right corner to get the English version of the page. Nothing exciting there, except perhaps for the fact that the page exists?
Just in case the 40D reference disappears from Canon HK Site (which is 99.99% likely ).the Google translation of the text is:
Home page "products" Digital camera "single mirror reflective digital camera" EOS 40D EOS 40D
The page looks just like their matching page for the 30D except it is missing the text below this describing the actual camera that is on the 30D page.
Oh and a Google search shows no other 40D references in the Caonon HK site just now.
Just for fun (and because before I saw the blank 40D page on the Canon HK site, a couple of the very confident “no 40D until September” posts had me wanting to verify the source I had which was this and the new 1 series would be soon (Feb / March)). So at lunchtime today I popped into to 3 local (Australian) camera city stores to ask the same question:
“I have a 5D and was thinking of getting a 30D as a second body, could I see one and what was the price?” If needed, I'd follow this up with a query about should I wait for a 30D replacment.
The first store (small) said that they had stopped stocking the 30D since December as they weren’t selling well – people were picking up the 400D or Nikon D80 and they didn’t wan to be stuck with old stock when Canon came out with a new model in the New Year. I asked when that was, they said that the Canon rep had been cagey but they understood it would be February or March, though it may not get to Australia straight away. They then offered to get me in a 30D and a “great price” by the end of the week.
The second store (medium size) said that they didn’t stock 30D's anymore because people were going for the 400D or the Nikons or Pentax, but that their professional store still had them. They then asked if I was in a hurry to buy. I said “why” and they said that they had heard that there was a significant price reduction coming for the 30D in Australia, so I may want to wait for that. I asked about a replacement for the 30D and they said they hadn't heard anything official , but that it wouldn't surprise them to see a replacement, given that they found the 30D hard to sell against the competion in the last couple of months.
The last store (large) had the 30D in stock and on special and they pushed it hard (offering to drop to price match the Nikon D80 + $100 as a opening possition). I asked why so cheap and the Nikon deal etc and they said that they had done a bulk order deal with Canon and where selling these off cheap to maintain volume. I then asked about a new model. They said that they had nothing definite and would ask the Canon rep next time he was in, but that the 20D and then the 350D were both discounted before new models were introduced. They then pointed out that both models (350D and 20D) were retained as current in the Canon line-up when the new models came out and the new models were then back at around the old models price before the reduction. They then pushed the great price, why wait for a potential new model that would cost more, did I really need more megapixels, the 8mp 30D was better than the 10mp 400D etc. I said that I would wait until I found out about any new model and then come back if the 30D still seemed attractive.
Anyway – just one town and three stores…. But interesting…
Canon is not taking part in the focus on imaging show, same as last year when they decided not to take part. Any new cameras were in a small cabinet on a retailers stand (can't remember who it was now, maybe calumet).
It is a shame, but it is probably indicative that canon thinks this shows is not really worthwhile to take part in anymore.

My bit here may only be relevant to Australia, but I confirmed today from our rep that there would not be any changes to our line up for the first half of the year. Though at first I thought I had a huge scoop, my 'don't trust the reps' too much thought came into it.
The reason I take what our reps say with a grain-of-salt, is because I know how things work. For example, if people aren't buying the 30D (and stores not stocking them) because rumors abound about its replacements, then Canon will come out and tell us to stock up because there is no replacement.
We are very close to whats going on though. A lot of sales staff from others stores aren't, they don't have the same training or information, and they make crap up to suit themselves.
It would seem odd that if a 40D, 5D, 1D replacement were on the boards that Australia wouldn't get it because we generally get it at the same time (with Canon) as everyone else.
So, the senarios are:
- there is nothing planned for the first half of '07,
- cameras will be announced but not released for 2 or 3 months (around second half of '07),
- cameras are released but Australia doesn't get them straight away because of excess stock or whatever,
- our rep is full of shit, is manipulating one of his biggest (and friendliest ) clients to sell current stock.
Woo Hoo! At long last! The Canon 'accidental leak' we have been drooling, lusting, and waiting over for the last 58 pages. MAybe some more to come in the next few days/ couple of weeks?
Sheesh, all this talk about the "40D being real!!!111oneoneone"
300D, 350D, 400D, I'll say it's a no-brainer that the next one will be the 450D, but that model just got updated, so we'll have to wait.
10D, 20D, 30D... Wanna wager a bet? 40D is pretty likely. No confirmation needed.
Now, the specifications of the 40D are what's interesting. At least 10 mpixel, that's for sure. Digic III is also a safe bet. But the rest, including "when", remains to be seen.
