cool...mine is low end, but it takes me almost anywhere.
Looks like you could climb Mt Ranier in the winter
See a lot of them here in Upstate SC, close to the mountains
Mine started out as pretty low end too -- then I found a wrecked Rubicon and bolted its running gear underneath mine Surprisingly, you see a lot of these in California too.

Back to the topic of colour and RAW etc - for my sins I've been processing about 1000 images (not mine) tonight taken on a 20D and NikonD200 - most were RAW but some on the 20D were JPEG and I'm gobsmacked by how the skin tone is looking straight out of the camera with what the Exif data tells me are 'standard' parameters. For some reason the photographer jumped between RAW and Jpeg on the same scene and try as I might with both C1 and ACR I can't match the quality of the skintone in the jpeg with either of them. Me thinks Canon knows what it's doing with it's in camera processing and ain't letting on to Adobe or PhaseOne etc. I need to look into this further but this has upset the applecart for me tonight at least....Show more →
With my Canons, I always keep Canon DPP handy for cases exactly like this one... Incidentally, DPP will not duplicate exactly what the in-camera firmware does, but it is generally much closer than other tools. (For software that *exactly* duplicates the in-camera firmware you must use Canon's RAW Image Task plug-in for ZoomBrowser or a product such as BreezeBrowser which uses the licensed Canon SDK.)
Now this really is OT, but thanks all, especially Jack, for this very useful information. I installed my Epson 9800 a few days ago so I might even take a picture for pleasure one of these days, and use raw!
Well, it sounds like I might not have my M8 by Christmas, so rather than using my 5D, which at this point I prefer not using for various reasons, I ended up buying an M6! Lovely little camera, much quieter than the M8. I will try to record the sounds of the M6, M8 and 5D, when I have them all side-by-side. I also bought four rolls of Tri-X and will have some fun with that. I will probably end up buying some more. It will cost me about 10 Euro per film to have them developed by a pro. Scans are 1 Euro each, or 15 Euro for a roll. If I enjoy this experiment, I will probably buy a Nikon or Minolta film scanner.

Alex thanks for this, its a more complete explanation for why the sensor filter on the M8 is thin. I'm still puzzled though because couldn't the colour shift in the corners be corrected in firmware with any lens as long as you could input its characteristics. To me this sounds like a better bet than dealing with the IR issue, is it?
Nik
Hi Nik,
First of all it is my opinion, not a fact (don't we all have opinions? ). As for firmware corrections, they are possible as long as the red chanel still has enough information. If it was dampened severely enough the noize and the loss of detail are certain. Other than that, this color correction must be very sensitive to the precize knoledge of the incident angle. This is a problem for wide open shots when the light comes to the point within a relatively wide conus.

So here's another small tip offered FWIW only: The K3 inks in the newest Epson printers (38,48,78,9800) have a gamut that extends significantly beyond Adobe RGB in the blue end (as well as in the high yellows) -- IOW you can now print more blues (and yellows and reds) than Adobe RGB can hold. Even if your image contains colors only slightly outside Adobe RGB in the blue area, just that little bit can dramatically alter our perception of blue hues like sky tones and make them significantly more appealing. IMO, just one more good reason to switch to a larger image processing space
Sounds like I need to download the part of your brain that deals with this. Can I ask you a few questions about this? If so should we take this into another thread?

If you're interested I'm going to sell my Canon FS4000US at a pretty good price. It's an excellent and very sharp scanner with the right software (Vuescan).

Film, here I come!
Well, I do have an new (actually factory refurbished), nearly impossible to find KonicaMinolta Scan Elite 5400 II sitting in a sealed box here. It's the best 35mm film scanner out there. I actually have 2 of them and don't really need 2 any more. (I also have a Nikon scanner, but the KM 5400 II is better for 35mm film). I'll eventually get around to selling the extra, unused KM 5400 II, so if you feel the need, let me know.

Assuming this question was directed to me -- and my advance apologies if it wasn't!:
I agree that discussions of color management are not pertinent to an M8 thread However, I find the signal to noise ratio so disturbing in the other forums on FM, I don't bother reading let alone posting on them any more.
Perhaps we could take it over to the processing forum and try it, but with the advance understanding I will cease comment there if the natives start going postal. If that happens, we can take it offline to email. As you have probably already deduced, I have a low tolerance for bitter dialogue

That spare tire has a nice Jeep attatched to it Jack. Nice shot...Just kiddin'
ROTFLMAO!!! No, that was deserved I don't really have any "good" pictures of it -- this was a snap I posted for my local dealer of that particular bumper and spare tire carrier (Safari Gard) along with some taken during the course of installation so they could show customers some before and afters.
Now the pressure is on -- I need to get a "good" shot of my out Jeep in her element
