Carsten, you joined the FM community after I have gone through my second user ID here and you already managed to post some very high quality posts. More importantly, when I watched you always willing to help other FMers with answers to their problems like what I have seen from other great leaders (Lotusm50, Robert Stevenson, Guy Mancuso, David Kipper et al.) in this community have done through the years, I cannot help but have great respect for you and what I think of you. I also seen you defended other FMers when you saw the circumstances were not being fairly treated.

Now maybe it is my fault for not being able to communicate well since English is my second language and I don't speak German neither but that should not be any excuse. Nonetheless, every concept must be challenged and more importantly the more we believe in our own concept the more we fight for it and when someone can disprove it we know we have progressed to the next level and in doing so we have helped others through this part of the journey as well. Thus, these are the goals that I would like to see happen here.

I shot several images of thee M8 equipped with the FilterView system from Photo Equip. The FilterView system was developed for use with a 77mm polarizing filter. The slits in the outer ring (which is where the polarizer fits has slits so that when rotating the filter you can see the polarizing effects! Pretty clever but simple. The system comes with the 77mm outer ring and four step up adapters from the common M lens sizes i.e. 39mm, 46mm, 49mm and 55mm.

I have been successfully using this product for several years and find iy very useful when polarization is needed.

When the M8 came out and the IR issues were discovered the Leica solution demanded UV/IR cut filters as the solution. Until I was satisfied that this indeed got the job done. I was not about to pay upwards of $150 per filter until I saw the results for myself. Voila.......out came my trusty old filterView and I bought a 77mm Heliopan "Digital Filter (Read UV/IR cut) and I now can use the IR solution on all of my M lenses. Total cost, $125 for the Filter View and $150 for the filter.

Please note that I have no affiliation with FilterView or Photo Equip. It is a simple solution to a complex and costly problem.

Here is image #2 where you can better see the color of the filter when viewed at large angles demonstrating that it is blocking the red end of the spectrum (and consequently creating excess Cyan in somw images!)

What is the cylinder barrel kind of thing at the right hand side of the camera ( as viewed from the photographer side ) ?

Pondria,
That's the optional camera grip that makes the camera easier to handle. I wouldn't use mine without now.

big filter, kind of detracts from the nice small size of the M8 and its lenses.

The Nocti is definitely a love hate relationship for me so far. Not as sharp as the more modern lenses and the thoughts of trading it in for a summilux asph start to surface but every now and then you get an eye poping image from the Nocti with a signature that no other lens could reproduce and then wonder how you could have thought of selling it.

I'd love something a bit smaller and lighter though to complement the Nocti. Anyone have any experience with the new Zeiss 50 f1.5 sonnar?

I avoid the Noct because of its swirly bokeh, and the mass (hardly RF style IMO). I did receive an Elmar 50/2.8 yesterday, and this one fits the bill for size - it collapses to almost nothing. The current version is described to deliver a fully modern image of high contrast, while retaining some personality.

By the way, M8 folks, how is the dust situation with M8 ?
My biggest and probably the only grief with 1DsII is the dust contamination. I feel almost upset that I have to be bothered by trivial things like dusts with the expensive high tech equipments

Woody,
looks very flexible filter solution but such a huge filter on tiny lens looks scary to me.

Hi Jack! Why, black of course. Seriously though, I like the look of the silver but think it might be slightly more prone to show in glasses, windows, glassware, or such. Even if the difference isn't huge I still like to keep the odds on my side. I may even put some gaffer tape over the red dot...

Weather wasn't all that pleasant, so I bailed early Friday... Had hoped for snow, but it was mostly just wet.

Woody,
Despite the size of the Filter View Holder for the compact M system, I see the immediate potential solutions for the M8 IR problem; it is much easier to find one 77 mm IR block filter than being able to get each filter for each of the M series lens. In addition, since there is IR leak, it would also serves another function with my already purchased IR pass filter from another lens system for infared photography. Unlike the SLR system, a total dark IR pass filter on a rangefinder would be perfect without a need to modify the filter of the SLR sensor. The engineer aspect for the function of the Filter View Holder is analogous to the engineer of the Hasselblad 903 SWC when they switched over from the older models. Thanks Woody for the careful detailed information with some photos as well.

I'm really sorry to hear about the 75 Cron, Guy. I hope you get it back quickly. I guess you will have lots of time to become more acquainted with your 50mm Lux Asph.

Dude, you should have called! My cabin was warm and dry and I did have extra beds -- and a cook! And I guessed black !

Cheers,

It is the Leica M8 grip. I find the M8 to be rather slippery but with the griip you have a strong place to hold the camera. Much more secure.

So, I've had my first experience with the dreaded magenta cast. The woman in the attached pic was a stylist for a crew that rented my studio for a week and I managed to convince her at the end of the production to let me shoot her for a few minutes. (unfortunately, she's an out of towner, so I won't be able to do a formal shoot with her).

Anyway, and more importantly, her sweater was actually black yet rendered as purple. I don't have the IR filters (because I was figuring I'd wait til Leica starts shipping the free ones) and I don't have an updated camera because my dealer is going to replace mine with one of the "new" ones, rather than me shipping it to Leica to be updated).

If I had been thinking about it, I would have processed th epic below thru Capture One and used the M8 magenta-compensating profiles, but I didn't think about it. Besides, I prefer to use Lightroom; it's just the workflow that I'm used to. And I don't want to go back and reprocess the RAW file in C1 at this point because I've already made the adjustments I like. (Obviously, if this were a paid shoot, I'd reprocess the file).

So, for those of you with "old" M8s, without IR filters, and not using C1, how do you deal with the magenta problem? Or is the simple answer that there's no way to deal with it other than IR filters and/or C1.

Pics attached. First one is the color one with only tonal adjustments and a little bit of sharpening applied -- no noise reduction. Shots at f2 around 1/60th at ISO 640. Second one is a B&W conversion (using Alien Skin's Exposure B&W "Tri-X pushed one stop" filter) that I think works well, but I'd still like to be able to use the color version without a purple freaking sweater.

(Note: I hould mention that yes, she does have green and auburn highlights in her hair, so it's not the camera causing that!)

Hey Jack

Surprisingly very little. This is because of the relatively large slits in the hood portion of the FilterView. You see mostly the slits then a small area which is the solid portion of the holder. Sounds crazy but true. By the way I am not proposing this as the ultimate solution. The ultimate solution is proper Leica IR cut filteers......one for each lens. As I said in my previous posts, I want to be sure of the value before I plonk down $150 per filter and I need 10 filters! The FilterView gives me a low cost way to use a single filter and cover all of my lenses.
