It is actually called "Hands On on M8". I hoped it would be like the DMR thread where people in the vanguard who already own the M8 can share their experiences and the rest of us can learn more about the camera, it now seems to have degenerated into a pissing contest.
I want to hear actual talk about the handling of the cameras, how does it work in available light etc.
To me a canon 5d and M8 are two completely different things. 1) SLR vs RF 2) auto vs mechanical etc.

Hello Jack, I saw your reasoning on the Leica forum. I've been thinking along much the same lines and decided to cancel my order a couple of weeks before delivery date. My main reason is that the concept of a RF camera is too restrictive for my kind of work and a M8 would simply see too little use. A few days later the IR issue surfaced (and the other minor problems) and this did of course nothing to change my mind.
However in your post on the LF you mentioned that Canon had lately improved the quality of its primes. I know this is a bit OT, but since a great many Canon owners are posting here, could you please give us a little further background on this subject?

We've been around this before. Here's the quote from the initial post:
"Feel free to provide image examples, 100% crops, and any relevant details about it, especially in relation to other cameras in its class."
> ...I hoped it would be like the DMR thread where people in the vanguard who already own the M8 can share their experiences and the rest of us can learn more about the camera
The DMR thread contained many examples of images taken with Canons. The difference is that in this thread, for a whole range of reasons, M8 postings have been relatively few, and what's been posted has not been very explicit, in image quality terms.

I don't accept that. Those genuinely curious about the M8 far outnumber those who want a flame war and there is lots of useful information here. In the circumstances the M8 thread is likely to get a bit tense sometimes. Like others have said: ignore that to which you prefer not to respond.

To me they are two similar things: professional 35mm style digital cameras costing a few thousand pounds. Consider that a number of people on this thread, e.g. Carsten have decided to switch directly from 5D to M8, and more have switched via DMR. It's shouldn't be taboo to compare the M8 to other cameras, even ones without a red circle.
M8 represents the class with large sensor with high pixel count. It is very natural to compare it with similar class cameras in terms of the image quality.
It is interesting though that no comparison is made to Nikon DSLRs.
Pondria, I doubt there are many Nikon owners around here, except perhaps those who also own a Canon or Leica. Nikons, like Leicas, have too large a film-flange distance to use lenses other than Nikon's own, with the single exception of The ZF Zeiss lenses, which are easily handled in the relatively low-volume Nikon forum.
Having said that, I recall some comparisons to both the D200 and the D2x around here. Not many, but some.
Hmm.
Should we start another thread for the M8 only? There seems to be two kinds of folks around here: those who want to know how well it compares to other systems, and those who just want to dicuss the M8. I will start an M8-only thread, so that both kinds of people may be happy. Let's see how that goes.
This thread's title honours Guy Mancuso, the starter of some of the longest and most controversial threads around here It is meant for discussing *only* the Leica M8, and not other cameras. For comparisons and discussions relative to other systems, please visit this thread:
I presume that mostly people who have already decided *for* the M8 will be interested in posting here, as well as people listening in. To start things off, here is a picture which demonstrates amazing pixel-level sharpness, as well as 2 100% crops.
Here are two pictures demonstrating the dreaded magenta syndrome, which I hope will be mostly fixed with the updates. My M8 is meant to return this coming week, so I will take these shots again, to compare. This fleece sweater is actually very black.
I'll let others anwer that one, since I don't own that lens.
Here are two pictures of the much-discussed Voigtländer Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical, to show how small it is, both alone, and next to a Canon 5D with 17-40L. It weighs 105g, compared to the 500g of the 17-40L, which I tend to use at around 17mm only. This size is exactly the reason I am moving to the M8, but enough of that.
Here is Guy using his M8 in Yosemite. The sun hadn't even risen yet, so it was Noctilux time. This was shot with an uncoded Noctilux at F1, 1/15th, 1250 iso and M8 ver1.06 firmware.
I was very interested in this thread. Please stop this mess and continue people's hands on comments. I do think any comparison to other cameras should be allowed. We compare what we know and have seen to rate other products, so I think that's important. Just keep it civil :0)
Richard, ha ha It is just as messy over there. I would say it is actually more civil here, and here we are also more among friends.
Dennis, I will certainly post in both threads, especially next week when I presume I will be able to finally compare my 5D and M8, but there are also other people who are beyond wanting to compare the M8 to anything, and don't want the noise. Two threads is not too much, I think.
I agree Carsten, I think your idea is actually a good one. Strange that it's necessary though. I suppose it's just that people care a lot about this issue.
Leica is a faith - not a brand. Questions and criticism are offensive to it's belivers and followers who by nature are sensitive and emotional. Take heed of what we are doing to promote harmony between faiths here in the UK - this year we have taken the sensible step of banning Christmas to prevent the grave offence and deep insult this would cause to other religeous groups. I hope this serves as a shining example of how to behave in a multi faith/format/brand community like ours - don't mention the C word!
Rubbish, Shirozina Leica is a brand. Some of its followers are religious, but don't let that tarnish the brand. I think it is perfectly valid for some people to want to endlessly compare. I am sure Pondria will want us to compare the M8 to a Sony-Ericsson K800i pretty soon. On the other hand, for those who have already bought, tested, and chosen the M8, why listen to all the noise in this thread? There is room for both kinds of people without invoking the 'C' word.
