Sam, do you think your 50L focused more accurately and consistently when you used the flash?

Not really, no. But again... the Roller Derby results were great. Focusing consistency was great, better than the 85/1.8 performed (not apples to apples, so take that for what it's worth).

FWIW, I think some of the reason my Roller Derby shots seem soft to some people is because I'm balancing ambient and flash, so there is an ambient image "underneath" the flash image which taints the contrast a bit.

When I have time I'll fart around with doing more studio type shots using flash as the primary lightsource to minimize such things, but again... not feeling particularly compelled to prove the quality of this lens to anyone at this point. It does the job I bought it for extremely well, so I'm happy.

Thanks, I am very interested in this lens, but I am afraid if I get it I will never use my 35L again.

Don't worry...you can't actually buy this lens anywhere right now. Assuming my pre-order for the 50 1.2 is ever filled, my 35L would definitely get less use. Of course, the 35L has really held its value and I don't think you would have a problem selling it at all.

this one in front of a wall but I'm afraid you won't be able to check for barrel distortion:

I have to say that I'm happy with the low light focusing ability. It is a definite improvement over 50 1.4

These are very pleasing. What white balance and metering pattern (ie: spot off the coat for example) ?

Interesting,,,, They have the "Canon EF 50mm f1.2 II USM"
Looks like those who bought the Mk I are gonna take a bath

Pictureline wants $1499. Anyway, looks like the B&H price of $1599 isn't going to stick at all.

On a related note, looks like the price of the 85L Mk II has dropped a bit in the last few months. Wasn't it retailing for about $2099 or so recently? With the $50 rebate, it's $1780 now.

That's the thing about the price discussion that always irritates me. When people were bitching about the 85/1.2 MKII they were making comparisons like it would always be $2099. The price "increase" over the MKI is much more modest now that the initial introduction price has cooled. Supply and demand, people. The 50/1.2L will be priced nearer the 35L once things settle down.

I sold my 50 f/1.4 for the 85 f/1.8 and never looked back, bu this 50L sure is tempting. Sometimes the 85L is just a tad too slow or too long for indoor events, picking off head shots with an 1.6x camera.

I don't really think it's a Canon EF 50mm f1.2 II USM

don't think they would release a II before they even filled the first series orders.

Yeah, I was kidding about that part. If you check the Mfr. Part No. on pictureline's site, you'll see its the same as the one at B&H. So it's not the MkII, this time.

Amazing he sold the new lens already. After some extra costs on other items, it seems like I probably won't be picking my lens up now till April which is bonus check time. Here in Canada Canon said they are backordered on this lens, so mine wont be coming in till later. I ordered mine quite late. But I don't suspect thats a problem since Im sure not many up here are ordering this lens.
