Gary, they were the first and best test shots anyone has yet provided here, so never mind the fringe - it has been a part of photography for decades.
Here it is already 8:45 in the morning - but even with broad daylight, there is little worth shooting outside, as almost everything looks grey and ugly at this time of the year.

PLEASE PEOPLE! Let's see some CAT shots! LMAO
I have black CAT branded sandal shoes but I think they are not worth shooting. And I don't have the lens either ...
Instead, the cat whiskers and the fur of those cats where the color of each hair changes between black and something lighter (grey, brown, white, yellow, ...) about 4 times per inch are good in showing the sharpness of the focus.
Ill tape a newpaper to the side of a dog while he runs in the yard. I will track him after sunset with ai-servo and shoot wide open. If it nails the "Los Angeles Times" spot on everyone will be happy?

Don't forget to do this while standing on your head! Obviously...I'm kidding.
I'll be interested to see your test shots also, and compare to my copy of this lens.

I am not certain if everyone is going to be happy. Some would like you to compare that with 50 f/1.4 and see if 50 f/1.2 L is 5 times better (whatever that means)

Gary,
What about autofocus speed in low light ?
It seems fine...but I really don't have anything to benchmark it against. The only other lenses that I have at this speed (original 85L and old 50L) were old designs. So comparison is not really fair, other than to say...the new lens seems faster and more sure.
And, I think the focus speed and accuracy is really some dependant on the camera sensors...combined with the lens. Correct? My 1Ds2 with a different autofocus system and this lens, would probably perform differently than a 20D or other body with this lens.
Now that the lens seems to be making it into the hands of a few people im hoping that I can get an idea of the AF speed and accuracy?...Im wondering how it compares to say the 85 1.2 and the 50 1.4?...obviously IQ comes first but for me AF speed and accuracy come a close second. If i am convinced that the speed of focus on this lens is substantially quicker than the 85 1.2 I would be inclined to lay down the cash...what im looking for i suppose is the IQ of the 85 1.2 and the AF speed of the 85 1.8...i know,i know ...Id love to hear how they stack up from somebody familiar with them all
More tests. 4 shots, all the same subject. f/1.2, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/5.6.
Natual and artificial (incandescent) light. Tripod. No MLU, and the subjects were about 5 feet away.
Compressed heavily by Photoshop again, which tends to leave some sharpening artifacts...but I think you get the idea. These look pretty good uncompressed. I am pleased with this lens so far.
