Hey Jim your photo's of the Mustangs are so cool i hope that everything comes together for me for the GML.
Got a couple of photo's to share.

1.The demo viper of the Royal Netherlands Airforce going trough its paces at the International Air Tattoo
This shot was taken with a Canon 500mm with 1.4ext ive rented the lens for the weekend and it was a killer combo but heavy hihi


2. Another with the 500 combo a Spanish Typhoon kicking the burners.

3. A Belgium F16 taking off with full afterburner from Kleine Brogel Airbase during the 2007 Operational Intergration Exercise (OIE) during that exercise the also organise a spottersday so the public and photographers can see the action up close.

4. Almost forgot this one a German Tornado taking off for its exercise.

For as far as i know there are no flying exemaples of the Hawker Typhoon
I looked it up for you there is only one Hawker Typhoon left it's in the RAF museum at Hendon in the UK

Nice work Guys! I'm wheels up early tomorrow morning for OSH. I'll be putting the MKIII through it's paces all week so we'll see if it has any secrets. The good news is all my Canon Buddies from the factory will be only steps away if I have any questions. I'll be demoing their new 6100 printer this week, it's supposed to be a phenominal machine.

Keep your eyes peeled for Rodolfo and his dinner gathering plans.

Just arrived in South Africa at the tail end of my trip, actually. I've spent time in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Botswana mostly, and I'm still on my first run through sorting the pictures. But I've had no contact with the outside world for almost three weeks, so I've got some catching up to do.

I fly out of Johannesburg in about 7 hours, and I'll be in the OSH area by Tuesday night. The group-organized dinner will be on Friday or Saturday unless those days become impossible (say, due to Jim's other commitments), and the reasons are to maximize the potential attendees and to give me time to organize it. :-)

thanks for that info, jan! i knew the typhoon was rare, so i'm not surprised. i did some research, too, and only about 3300 were ever built. it had issues-at least early on, so i doubt there was much incentive to keep them around. the tempest was the real beauty, as it solved many of the problems of the typhoon, but unfortunately it came along at the end of the war and the beginning of jets. fewer than a 1000 of those were built. the only glimpse of that heritage any of us can see are the sea fury variants at the air races, i guess.

AirVenture is the acid test for my new MKIII. I kind of made up my mind that I'd get my feet wet with it today, if I wasn't pleased I'd leave it with my Buddies at the Canon house to set the custom functions for idiot default. I shot 20 GB in 2 hours and, while I'm not 10% of the way through the images, I'm pretty happy and will press it into service again at dawn tomorrow.

Thanks for your thoughts! Nope my Six is sitting back in my hangar in Texas. Don't think I don't ponder that scenario every minute I'm flying it though!!

Heritage Flight today was neat, an F-15 and a 51, they did a great job making it look natural.

Officially arrived at my hotel in Green Bay (reserved only six months ahead by mistake, so I'm waaaay out there) just now. I'll be at OSH just after noon, I guess. I can sleep next year... right now there are airplanes to shoot and things to do!

That 200-400 lens is sweet. Had a chance to try it once.

JW do you noticed any AF problems with your mk III? Your previous shoots looked sharper at least to me. Hard to judge anything on thumbnails anyway.

I am certainly no expert, but I very much prefer to use a CPL for shooting airshows so far. In many cases I'm shooting prop planes, when I want to slow down the shutter without closing down the aperture too much... so in those cases, the loss of light caused by the CPL actually works to my benefit. And I love reduction in glare and reflections, and the increased saturation in the sky and in aircraft colors.

I actually do the opposite of what you suggest: I shy away from the CPL for static displays. For aerobatics, you're shooting very long focal lengths and capturing small slices of sky, so differential polarization effects are negligible. But for statics, often shot at 50mm or less, the arc of sky shown in the shot increased immensely, and the risk of CPL visual effects increases with it.

I will, of course, happily accept critiques and discussion about my opinions. Most of what I "know" of aircraft photography I have learned recently, so some of it may well turn out to be wrong in the end.

Dear Kyle, Marko & Rodolfo,

First, Rodolfo is right on the money with his advice re: polarizer use, good job! Second, re: the MKIII, it's an incredible piece of technology and after several days of putting it through it's paces at AirVenture, I have to conclude it's much smarter than I am at the moment. I think for many reasons we tend to jump on a piece of equipment or a company hastily when our expectations aren't met from the get go. Having said that, given current results, I am not comfortable with this camera yet. Up to AirVenture, I was reasonably pleased with it and enamoured with all the thoughtful improvements incorporated. I'm not yet willing to say that it's the MKIII's fault, but using the same techniques that I've developed over a lifetime of photography, I'm seeing decidedly different results. We changed the custom functions around yesterday and I'm about to begin downloading today's images. More to follow.
