Jim - just amazing work! Its shots like yours that inspire all of the rest of us to be better at what we do - whether for pay or just the profit of capturing the "shot".

I grew up in Wichita and remember every time I heard a plane or chopper outside, running outdoors as a little kid with my exacta and a 50mm lens hoping to get shots like my dad brought home from Boeing. When you're 10 - 300mm glass isn't even a reality. Later I shot the Blue Angels at McConnell (sic) - by then I had moved up to a 135 on the Exacta... one decent shot and a taste for more... then i put the cameras away for the most part until a few years ago. Last year I had the opportunity to shoot the pilots party for the Angels Over Atlanta Airshow and then shoot the shows the next couple of days.

All that said - seeing your shots and thinking about mine - I see I have a lot to learn - 'cause i still want to get there! Seriously considering breaking down and taking my wife to vist her mother in Dallas and your seminar would give me a twofold reason to be there. What a great opportunity! Ever heard of Johnny Johnston? I guess he's flown a few missions... he's my wife's step-father. Always interesting to hear him tell stories about his flying days...

You mentiond Paul Bowen - I have wondered whatever became of him. He used to help lead our little hippie church back in the 70's in Wichita and he always had a camera in his hands. Seems like the last shots I saw were on the cover of a Piper magazine he did - He too has a great eye.

in Him - we live and breath... and get to take picts of His creation

here's a couple from the airshow...

Dear Jon, Steve and Rusty,

Nice work all of you! Thank you for your kind comments and encouragement. Looks like for the moment our first seminar is on hold until we can get enough folks together to make it work. That being said, it will happen and it will be fun and informative. This coming year is already shaping up to be a great one for aviation subjects. I'll be one of the event photographers for the largest gathering of Mustangs since WWII which is slated for September in Ohio. AirVenture '07 is looking great as usual, and I've been booked for a couple dozen aviation related events. All that should provide hundreds of new images to post and discuss.

I've got a brainstorming session with a couple of friends and business associates later this week to see what creative avenues we might come up with to put not only our seminats in gear but maybe a blog with a subscription side.

You guys have inspired me as well, I just need to take some time to figure out where and how I can best serve in the furtherance of your skills and passion for photography and aviation.

May The Good Lord keep and bless you and yours now and throughout the coming year!

Sincerely,

Jim

No John, but it looks like Dale Snodgrass was. Mine was shot at NAS Pensacola this Nov. Yours is a great shot, I admire your panning skills. Air show photography is a new area for me and I'm having a lot of fun. I would love to see more of your work. Here is a link to my pbase site.

We had two dismally cloudy days with only Saturday morning with anything like blue sky. It was a good show - but I sure would have loved a few puffy white clouds with a field of blue to showcase these great airplanes. It was my first real efforts trying to use my 100-400 L and it took some getting used to. Thank God for IS!

Sorry to hear about the Dallas seminar. Maybe when things are a little better set - or if there is one here in Atlanta sometime - I know I'd like to attend.

Hi Jon,

I would have liked to kick off the seminar in January but there's no point in doing all that organization and having a half dozen attendees. We need a certain level of attendance to make it dynamic. Several of the aviation publications that I shoot for will run announcements for me in the next few months and that should boost our numbers. E-mail me your info and I'l put you on the list to contact. If you know of anyone else in your area or anywhere that would be interested, let me know.

Happy New Year!

Jim:

I have been an almost daily visitor to this thread since it began well before Halloween! Your images are stunning and in the beginning they were what continued to bring me back. Then I became more intrigued by your willingness to share information and encourage. I kept waiting for something to happen in the thread that turned it ugly and pitted people against people, or ego against ego. You didn't let that happen. You have kept it positive and at times almost spiritual. I know His love too, and you have done a magnificent job of reflecting it in a most unusual place. In reading the posts it has been apparent that more than one has reflected on "I want what he's got." Many of course are focused on your skills and enviable position within the pro-photographer ranks. But, I have a strong feeling that there are others who have felt that there is more to this than just a keen eye and first class gear - and most importantly will, or have, acted on that impulse. And even if that number is just one, what a tremendous gift you helped that person receive.

I have always been intrigued with vintage aircraft and am fortunate to live only about 45 minutes from the Evergreen Air Museum. My dad, who lives in nearby McMinnville, was a private pilot and I spent many, many hours flying with him and just sitting at the local airport watching others shoot touch and goes. He absolutely loved to fly, but lost his medical due to heart problems. He just had knee surgery and is really struggling with the recovery. I told him about your thread and pictures, which started a wonderful conversation with him about flying and P-51s. It was uplifting for both of us. Thanks.

If you're ever in this neck of the woods I'd consider it an honor to shake your hand.

Dear DSchamp,

Just when I think this thread is dead someone we haven't heard from posts a comment that brings me to my knees. To say "thanks!" for your kind thoughts is a bit lacking, but thanks! You all have added a dimension to my photography that I haven't experienced until now. I'm kind of a one man band, no assistant, poor delegator worker bee type. My typical year consists of 300 + assignments and I'm the marketing guy, the photographer, the quality control person, the client rep, delivery and accounting department. You can probably surmise that there's not a great deal of time left over for comeraderie or resting on my laurels. The past few months with all of you has been a great deal of fun and I feel as though we've become friends.

I'm glad the tone of our thread has maintained it's warmth. There are some huge ego's out there and when you're dealing with something as personal as a person's creative vision and ability, there's a substantial degree of vulnerability there. We've all been blessed with talent in different areas and we're all at varying levels of development with those gifts. The very least we can do for each other is encourage. Shoot, I met a gentleman early in this thread who has photographic talent, but he's up to his emotional ears being a husband and a Dad to two young boys, one of whom is challenged by Autism. He confided that he probably would never have the resources financially or time-wise to visit and photograph many of the places we go to without a thought. If that doesn't put your ego some place way on a back shelf, nothing will. There's little I wouldn't do for, or share with that man, and we've never laid eyes on each other. Your relationship with your Dad and his physical challenges touches my heart. My Dad died at 57, we never got to fly together. I have to believe that my love for winged things began during those afternoon trips out to Glenview NAS where he got his wings many years before. My Pop was a hard charger and those are about the only relaxing memories I have of our life together, you guys keep making them!

I'm more than happy to share any technique, any shortcut with you guys. There's nothing I'd like better than knowing y'all are bringing home "goose-bump" shots more often because of something I was able to help you with.

I wish your Dad a speedy recovery. Next time I'm in your neck of the woods it would be my pleasure to buy lunch.

Happy New Year!

Jim

Hi George,

Glad you like them. the vertical was specifically shot for cover applications, my favorite (and the one that is selling like hot cakes!) is the horizontal you like best. The largest print so far has been 40 x 60" inch and it is a killer. You should see the one we did as a duraflex in a large light box.

Jim,
I don't know that there has been a "thread" posted on FredMiranda that has captured my interest as much as yours.
Your unselfish , as well as the other "posters", offering of information amd images is not to be outdone by your unseemingless patriotism.
As I have mentioned in "repiles" previously, as a 2 time combat veteran of Vietnam, "air jocks" saved hundreds and thousands of lives with their undaunting and unwavering disregard for personal safety in the support of their fellow pilots and their undying( and dying) support of ground combat infantry. Since my time was 1967-1969, I am not diminishing in any way, shape, or form the dedication of ALL aviators in conflicts past, present and future. In today's continual world conflicts, ALL pilots, commercial, private or military should be thanked for keeping the skies as safe as humanly possible.
The images presented in your thread send "goose-bumps", as others have mentioned, and keep my imagination in a high state of excitement. Your dedication is exemplary and I personally thank you for it!
I hope you have a wonderful, joyous and prosperous New Year! To you and those who fly these marvels of the air, you have my deepest admiration and thanks!
Dan

Hi Keith,

Yes, the Corsair got that name because the gull wing design made a distinctive whistling sound as the pilot dove in for the kill. Quite an airplane!

I have a couple photos that been sitting for a few days. So I had a chance to sit down tonight and see what could be done. Here is one that I thought would be fitting for this thread.
