Also, as a Leica lens convert working with a 5D (and knowing they be different beasts from the DMR in many a way) I still encourage the participants to make some comparisons to the Canon SLR's as I have limited experience with the DMR and still need something to compare with. My 5D works great - within it's inherent limitations - and I don't expect the M8 to be the final solution but I would love to hear it's qualities in perspective to something I can relate to.
I brought my 5D to the Leica store today, and although I was not allowed to stick a memory card in the M8, both cameras can zoom to 100% on the screen. I tried shooting my 5d+Summicron 50 against the M8 with 28/2.8 and 50/1.4 Asph. and found that although I felt good about focusing on the 5D and insecure about focusing on the M8, the M8 results were consistently sharper than the 5D! I was so surprised, and this is still with the beta 1.2 firmware. On the other hand, even at ISO 640, the 5D has a small edge in noise... We will have to see if Leica can pull off a clean ISO 640 (there is no 800, and the next step is 1250, I think). Real on-screen comparisons will have to follow, but were not possible for me at this time.
Sean, perhaps you can confirm my findings by not denying them? Do you deny what I say?
Overall, I was very happy with the handling of the M8. The menus were odd compared to other cameras, including the DMR (which I admittedly have used only minimally), but I found I was quickly getting used to it. One killer feature is the ability of the histogram to update to include only the zoomed part of the picture. The zoom also has fewer steps than the Canon, so I zoomed quicker and more accurately, with the turn-ring-thing than with the Canon's little +/- buttons.
One oddity, taught to me by an old-timer in the store today: instead of holding the left hand with thumb under the camera or lens, and the rest of the fingers around the top of camera or lens, turn your hand 90 degrees, and put the thumb up along the left side of the camera, and the rest of the fingers under the camera, with the index finger on the focusing knob on the lens. Keeps the fingers out of the way of the rangefinder. It feels strange, but it works.
I added my name to the list and started planning what I will do to get the money. I can raise some money by selling 5D, 17-40L, Summicron-R 35 and 50, as well as my Flektogon 20mm and the Elmarit-R 135. I will keep the 180/2.8 and 80/1.4 for now, in anticipation of maybe getting an R10 later. All this will get me about 3000 Euro or a bit more if I am lucky. I need 4200+2500 for M8 and 50 Lux Asph., and another 800 Euro for CV15 and CV28/1.9. The 75/2 will have to come later. Ouch. There goes all my tax money for 2006. But then I will have a kick-ass small and light kit I can carry all the time. At the moment I find that I carry only the 5D and three lenses, and I still have a persistent small pain in my lower back.
