Sean,
IMO you could (and I hope you will) talk here about the M8 and lenses "parallel" to your site without relating to your site.
I can understand if you stop posting because of the reactions people here showed but on the other side I think its nearly impossible to keep everybody happy and why give up good communication with many people just because there are very few ones who focus there own frustration to others.
cheers, tom
I realize many of you include the 35 in the setup.
What would you typically shoot with 35mm on 1.3 crop?
I personally dont find it that attractive for the M8.

The question for me isn't so much focal length as which 21, 35 and 75/90? Zeiss or Leica 21; Zeiss, Leica or CV 35 amd 1.4 or f:2? and 75 cron or 90 cron (Apo or pre) or CV APO Lanthar. Would also probably include a 50, Planar or Summicron? or Summilux, Asph or preA? CV Nokton? It is all very confusing...
If I didnt have a Leica 21 allready and price/value was the driver I would go for the 21 Zeiss instead of the Leica.
If you like available light than for the 35 I would go for Leica 35/1.4asph if you can afford it.
WIth the 1.3 crop I would prefer 75 to 90, but I am not sure if I would go for the f2 or the 1.4.
50mm my opinionen is that the 50/1.4asph is an oustanding lens, fast, sharp, still a nice bokeh.Perfect combo of speed, sharpness and still character. BUT (IMO) real expensive.
I have never owned the Nokton but several Leica 50s and my "hit-list" would be:
50/1.4asph, 50/1.4pre-asph, 50/1.5 nokton, 50/2.0 cron and somewhere in between the Zeiss.

As I understand it, I am not to post anything related to my site, my reviews, etc. here. Since virtually all of my testing of the M8, lenses, etc. is all for that site and those reviews, I guess there's really not a lot that I can talk about here. That includes, apparently, responding to questions from people here about things I've written in the articles, etc. In short, I don't think I'll be posting much on FM because it really would require walking on eggshells. My work as a photographer, experience with cameras and lenses, writing, etc. is now all interwined with the site. It's impossible to separate them now and I don't want to have to second guess every post I make. I note, for example, that the link to my web site has now been removed from my signature. No worries, I'll answer questions on other forums. Whomever it is that complained to Fred, I assume you'll be satisfied now.

It gives me a FOV of a 48mm on 35mm film. A nice FOV for street work and informal people shoots.

I am interested which lenses you guys would choose if you had to narrow it down to either 2 or 3 lenses?
for me, I guess
2 lens set: 24 and 50/1.4 (or maybe 24 and 75)
3 lens set: 15,24,50 (or 21, 28, 75 ?)
I think the hard part will be to not destroy the simplicity of the M8 with a shelf full of lenses.
My criterion would be the shortest focal lengths accommodated by the VF, which could be easily seen according to ones glass-wearing requirements. I don't wear them but this may be a consideration for others.
Thus the 24, 28, and 35mm FL for an M8 3-lens set and 24 and 35 for a 2 lens set for average shooting conditions. However, if one was about to go out when it was dark, one would select the fastest lenses available so would go 28/2 (or 1.9), 35/1.4, and 50/(1.0 or 1.4) for a 3-lens set or any two of these according to ones arsenal (other than taking two 50s).
For the M6 it is 28, 35, and 50 for the 3-lens set. I may also take a 90 or 135 along when not also bringing an SLR. When light gathering ability is needed, the 35/1.4 and 50/1.0 are taken.

Why not? What is wrong with the 50 mm equivalent FOV? About the most "classical" you can get...
2 lens setup for available light 35 Lux ASPH & 75 Lux. I'm not sure if I'll want something wider and what FL I will require, but for starters the 35 & 75 will do very nicely.
There is nothing more personal than choice of focal length..... but like Elliot Erwitt used to say ..... any lens wider or longer than than 50 mm tends to put interest where there is none!
There is a truth in it ..... with 50mm you are out there at your own: composition and content have to make the picture!
i like the extra view from the 15 (Heliar) then jumping to the 24 and then the 50. it is harder to get wider when you need it, but you can usually step closer. 18 and 24 are pretty close, eh?
I subscribe to Sean's site happily. give the guy a break, he puts out plenty. I would ask the complainer just what he might have contributed by comaprison.
The thing I have enjoyed about this forum is it's mutually supportive attitude.
It also is not free for me as I am willing to participate in the products offered.
I just find it hard to see the difficulty in who posts where.
I listen to opinions on free to air TV about movies I have to pay to see at a cinema or buy a DVD, since I have not watched a movie at the cinema for years or watched a DVD for months should I complain? or should I just turn the TV off? change channel? read another thread?
I spoken on the issue of Sean's involvement here before, and I consider myself neutral as I have only some indirect interest in the M8. Anything I have had to say I have said it here, openly. I think the issue always comes down to the same thing. As you say, Fred's policy has been around for a long time. It has affected other people in a similar manner before. For many of us who have spoken out, it's not a personal matter as some here want to believe, but one of fairness. It can't be denied that he does have something to sell - Sean Reid Reviews.

Paul, great respect for you. But I really disagree with you on this. This site taking out one of the most knowlegeable voices anywhere on the M8 and the use of rangefinders is simply mindless. Read back through this thread and take out Sean's voice, and then decide who was getting the most out of this conversation.
Fortunately, as Sean and others have pointed out, there are a number of excellent sites that Sean also takes the time to visit and answer questions about the M8 and many other topics of interest to photographers. (I'm not putting in the names, because assuming, from reading through the last posts, there's probably a rule that doesn't allow that -- sometimes.)
So, nothing lost. Sean will have more time to join in on those other conversations. And like someone said, and we saw with a former site that no longer exists, we're all free to change the channel when the rules start to be used to shut down the most knowledgeable voices.
"Happypagehk, has three Leica-EOS adapter for sale (you know where). I got one so there are two remaining. There has been some discusion on this board about when he would have these available again so I thought I'd let others here know. I think they have the best chip/adapter combo on the market.
Paul" https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/467870#4017332
Now imagine hypothetically that for the benefit of forum members who have questions about his product Mr. Happypagehk were to make himself availabe on FM to answer questions directly. This would be in response to many forum members who have used, benefited from, and publically recommended his product on the forum. Mr Happypagehk would also hypothetically refer to his product when discussing adapters in general as he is responding to questions about his product, not initiating them. Would you critisize him for doing so?
I feel bad for what happened b/c if you read back you'll see that Sean was simply responding to enthusiasitc comments on his reviews by FM members (similar to yours on the chip/adapters). I have more than an "indirect interest in" the M8 as I have one on order and I've benefited greatly from reading his excellent reviews. If Seans informative responses to our questions come at the expense of him getting more subscriptions then I'm fine with it. As far as I can tell he's been answering questions and providing more useful information in the past several weeks than many have in their entire FM careers.
For those of you who resent the value Sean's site provides, why don't you do your own in competition?
Why don't you become an experienced professional photographer with a gift for writing and objective review which is unusual for anyone frequenting the internet? Why don't you work all hours to get the reviews out to your subscribers? Why don't you build the trusted relationships with vendors so that you are on the inside track? Why don't you spend hours answering inane lens A or lens B questions from people who are too penny-pinching to subscribe? And for those who do subscribe, why don't you offer a bargain price of less than $26.50?
If you do all of that, you can justifiably complain about fairness that Sean's site is mentioned here and your's is not. But until you do all of that, you should recognise that Sean's site is a unique resource which is helping us all make better and more informed buying decsions.
