if someone could email or PM me the "other forums" where this issue won't come up, I'd appreciate it. I love this thread and the ones like it; if they were no longer to appear on fm.com I'll probably stop coming here as this is the only forum here I find worth reading anymore.

All this vindictiveness just because Sean did't fall flat on his belly in admiration when a celebrity started posting on another forum....A pity it comes to this *sigh*....Let's start talking camera's again and hope this will resolve itself, bringing Sean back.

Reichman's review is up. Only 8 bits vs. 16 bits advertised in the raw files. The R9 has 16 bits, right? Why the change? Maybe to save on file size? Seems like an odd choice, though from Reichman's review and Sean's review, it doesn't seem to have affected image quality. (But then imagine what the IQ would have been like with 16 bits.) . . . Boy am I pissed that Sean Reid is apparently being kicked off this forum. I will definitely need to frequent the Leica and Luminous landscape forums more frequently now. I hope that the alternate digital forum doesn't get obsolesced.

Isn't the 8 vs 16 bit thing moot, Guy, if Leica actually delivers on file quality?

re: 8 v 16 bit, MR says:

"I asked if there were any true 16 bit files from any camera. he ['Dr. Know''] said that he had never seen one (and he's seen them all). He said that files from Phase One backs are 14 bit (they too claim to be 16 bit), Canon raw files are 12 bit, and that various other cameras range from 8 to 12 bits."

I'm unclear on where the DMR files would be in this analysis. I was thinking they are 16, but are they the only ones?

Image and color quality is the most important thing, but I would like to understand this too.

There is an extensive discussion of the 8 vs 16 bit that I started on the Leica User Forum(Digital) (and it kept going like the 'energizer rabbit' - oops, can I say that? Is that considered advertising??)

Lots of speculationand I STILL dont hear a clear answer. However, the images speakfor themselves.

Andrej did say the 8 bit is not LINEAR, but likely exponential/logarithmic, so DR stays high, but some gradations are POSSIBLY lost. Since most of us use 16 bit for DR and then 8 bit for printing and viewing, it may really NOT make any difference at all.

Leica, kudos if that is true for doubling storage!

Not to dredge up old news, but I was just catching up from the weekend and saw that Sean basically got booted from FM.

When did FM become another Rob Galbraith or photo.net? First we got the trolls in here and Guy almost deleted the DMR thread. Now people are getting censored (and having their sig files "edited"). Sorry, but this is crazy. Paul Buff can post in the lighting thread, the guy who makes the "Flip-It" thing can post in the wedding thread, but Sean Reid, who at this point is pretty much the only one here with actual knowledge of the M8 gets booted because he also has a subscription site (which, by the way, I don't subscribe to because I have not yet purchased any of the rangfinders he reviews)?

Chuck, Guy and Robert better go into hiding and if I catch anyone here from Arizona Highways or Texas highways I'm turning you in. I'm off to raise hell in the Sports forum. I think the moderator has a sticky thread about helping people defect to Sports Shooter!

It still rankles a little with me too. Sean is/was a great resource for this forum, and I am not sure what (if anything) we can do to reverse the decision, even in the light of other people supporting their (paid for) 'products' within this (or another FM) forum, as you rightly point out. Are we to ban the likes of Chuck Westfall for answering questions on Canon? Strange goings on.....

I know that my subscription for upload to FM is not much, but I took it out as a kind of paid subscription to help Fred maintain the site. I have been considering withdrawing it in protest, but in the end, I am not sure it would change things. There are many times I recommend people to visit FM, or to buy an FM PS plugin/product. Perhaps I should stop that too. More "sleeping on it" is required I think.

I didn't consider Sean's contributions to be 'business promotion', and the only reason it became a problem was that people wanted him to 'give away for free' the products that he charges for, and he had to find a way to say 'no'. Imagine that. It's like asking a magazine to give away their reviews on the web for this months publication so that you didn't have to buy it, or Canon to send you a free camera because you don't want to pay for it.

If Fred could give some consideration to this matter, and perhaps give some specific guidance, that would be appreciated. After all, any one who does 'anything' for money and has a link to their website is effectively promoting their business here, overtly or not.

I think it goes a step further if we are being stuipd about it. Anyone here who uses their real name, like Guy Mancuso or robsteve (I'll pick on them because they know I mean it purely in jest) are only here to pitch their businesses. First, a quick google search can take us directly to their Web sites and they post pictures here to show that they are good photographers.

I know that seems like a big leap, but really it is not. Sean has never done anything to hurt the FM community, let him in.

Oh, and while we are naming names and pointing fingers, Michael Reichmann should be banned to (he lurks here, rarely posts). He sells subscriptions to the Video Journal. I'm an associate editor of a sailing publication, should I be booted too?

Y'know, I've been following the controversy regarding Sein Reid a bit. I personally found his contributions helpful and would hate to see him removed from the forum. Ultimately, however, it's Fred's house and he can do whatever he likes, so I'm not going to write him to complain about it ... the question, however, is whether everyone else (me included) wants to stay. I'd hate to see what happened on the RG forums happen here, since it's been a great source of info...

to fully impose the sanction on self promotion, FM ought to go back and delete all the sreid posts. That would be consistent but what a disservice to the readers.

here is a solution: let anyone who wants to promote their service pay a small "Vendor" fee to the site.

Except that would now condone advertising, which we all prefer to keep out of FM.

As already said, it's Fred's site, he can do what he wants. However, if all this is the result of some one complaining, because they did not have access to something they did not feel was worth paying for, then I hope they are happy, because now they (and we) have access to even less.... well done.

However, let's not do anything that will get this thread locked ......

I dont like the reaction towards Sean either and find his knowledge very valuable, but IMO his and the forums reaction is overreaction.

There is a previous history (not on this forum) that probably caused all this and I think that explains a lot of all the excitement.
