For one, I have two moderate and one minor concern regarding the lens. I hope Canon have addressed them well.
(1) Lack of undue softness wide open.
(2) Better CA control than the 85L.
(3) Manual focus ring ( just a "positioner", assuming electronic manual focus) to feel more snug and solid than the 85L.
and considering the speed ... that shots not too bad at all. Quite a specialty lens and likely a great one at that. But it's still a 50 to me and I would rather put my hard earned bucks into a more useful (to me) focal length - at that kind of monetary expenditure. A 50 for my tastes would have to serve coffee as well to be of interest if it's more than a few hundred bucks.
I just hope that Canon doesn't bring out a new 135 F2.0. The old one is flawless and I'd hate to be told how a new one with a fatter red ring is a great deal at 2499.00. and how when it drops to 1899.00 a few months later how it will be a must have bargain.
I think I should take up sailing yacht's for a hobby. Likely cheaper.

When I need autofocus, I’ll use my Canon 50 f1.4. When I need sharpness, contrast, and bokeh at wide open, I’ll use my Zeiss 50 f1.7. I’ll just have to limp along with that small aperture; oh the sacrifices we must make to conserve money!

Is it too much to ask that Canon update their 19 year old plastic construction of 24 f2.8, 28 f2.8, 35 f2? No optics change, just L metal construction and USM motors? Oh and double or triple the present low prices of these plastic lenses. Canon would sell 1,000 times more of these lenses, and make vastly more money than the extremely limited market of $1600 f1.2 lenses.
The 50L would be nice, but if I'm stopping down to f/8 in the studio, the 50 macro is probably sharper than the 50L, and I'd feel sad using a 1.2 lens at f/8.
I don't think the 50 L is really that expensive (For what it is), Its still cheaper then the 85L II and offers better AF speed and the f/1.2 maximum aperture. Shure its expensive to most average amateurs, but then you have 3 other 50's to choose from!
To me the pricing is about right for such a lens, And far cheaper then buying a used 50 f/1.0!
If I remember right, the 85L mark 1 was rated pretty poor by looking at the mtf charts from canon. I think that the new mark2 has worse mtf charts than the mark1. Oh well. My point being is that while the mtf charts look poor, the images from the 85Ls are not. If the new 50L has any characteristics of the 85L in color, contrast and bokeh, I am in.
I always wanted a 50 1.0 and never could get my mits on one despite trying. Not to sit on the shelf but to use. Now, with this new addition, albeit a tad slower, I will finally have a 50mm that gives me all that I want. Superb DOF control, color and contrast, af speed and accuracy. Well, if canon is right it will be all those and a bag of chips! I cant wait! where is that 5 mile long preorder sheet!!!

I would have bought this lens if it cost up to 1,000 but sadly at 1,600 with POOR MTF results, and lacking weather sealing this lens is just pathetic.
There are much better choices for the money.
The new 50 L is weather sealed:
"High level dust and moisture resistance - designed for use in harsh conditions"
Well, I for one am pretty excited to see it finally here. For my focal length needs/wants, the lack of a 50mm L has been a big bummer.
For those complaining about it, you don't have to buy it. MTF Charts and the eventual "ratings" from photozone and the like are for pixel-peepers. The real results will come from the shooters who actually use their equipment, not test it.

Why give up NOW ? I guess it will not be long before you'd have a much better selection of 50 f/1.0's oferred for sale, at a lower price.
That is, if you are still convinced that the lens is as good for photography as it is for collecting. Which I am not sure you are.
