For what it's worth, if the focus speed is close to the 50/1.4 that's fine for me. Sure, I'd prefer it was as fast as the 85/1.8, but as long as the focusing is accurate and reasonably quick, it will serve my purposes.
Here, here, Sam. I have the 50 1.4 as well and would love to see more accuracy especially when we're dealing with such tight DOF, and of course I would love to see the smooth bokeh of the 85 L in the new 50... time will tell.
Well i took some shots with it on a Canon show and ... DAMN!!! come january i want one! And it is fast enough. I'll post some samples tomorrow.
Build quality is very good, lenshood is stable and did i already say it was fast?

I would love to buy it but can't justify it. If it were $850 I could. I will jsut stick with my 50 1.4.
It won't sell for $1600 for long, just like the $1250 of the 70-200 f/4L IS is IMO an ambit claim. If they stay at these prices Canon is showing a worrying trend to increase L glass prices dramatically beyond their worth and will make Nikon glass look good value. I'd hate to think then how much they'd ask for a 200 f/1.8L IS, maybe $5K based on the last 4 L glass releases. I'd say $1100 for the 50L and $1000 for the 70-200L would be sensible.
Now we have a 24-105 f/4L IS and 70-200 f/4L IS will they release a 17-40(50) f/4L IS to make the holy, lightweight trinity? Of course they'd price that at $1500.

Oh yes, please do share, everything else has been pretty mediocre to dismal. I'd be curious what body you tested the lens on as well...

I can't find where the pics are on your site I'm more curious about AF speed which you said was really fast, I like that you were able to put the 50 on your 1D MkIIn as that will give a better indication of how well AF does on the 1 series bodies... thank you M.G.

It'll be interesting for me to get a copy of this new lens and see if it is a sharp as my current 50L.
Now then, Gary, what if the 50 f/1.2 turns out to be "sharper" than your 50 f/1.0 ?
No sweat, in that case should you decide to sell (heart broken ?), I'd be prepared to discuss the price. At least I suspect your copy is probably as good as those lenses get.
If the new 50L turns out to be more desirable...then I probably will sell the old one.
I am fond of the old one, but the only reason that I have it is because I like the 50mm length for what I shoot, and want L glass (for the look (color and contrast)) ....and I use it mostly at f/1.6 to f/5.6.
I very seldom have an opportunity to use it at f/1.
So if an f/1.2 does as well or better, then I probably would sell. I appreciate the old 50L, but am not a collector....
Why I will buy the 50 1.2? The other night I was sitting outside with wife and kids. Grabbed the 5D with 50 1.4, tried to focus, no-joy. Not enough light. I moved a candle over and was able to focus about half the time, but only about half those shots came out well. If I had the 1.2 I think I could have improved both percentages. How much should the 1.2 cost and is it a value? I'd say I wish it cost less, but will buy it anyway.
Despite all the ranting and raving, this was a fairly interesting thread.

sounds like a story meant to convince yourself to buy one ... (1) you have an 85 f/1.2, why didn't you use that? (2) are these moments with your kids worth the cost of a 50/1.2, which you can't yet buy, but not worth the cost of a 50/1.0, which you can buy now and presumably would increase that percentage even more? (3) use the focus assist from your flash!
