digitlakamera.de is reliable as far as i know. I visit it recently to confirm infomation i get from other sources in the internet because they tend to wait until things are settled. Or maybe they are just slow ? The truth is, i don't know. I'm going to visit Photokina and maybe i'll be wiser I personally don't think that canon will produce larger format lenses...
Yeah, this was at dpreview a while ago, and I still don't know what to think of it.
A 36x48mm sensor in a 35mm camera would be pretty strange, since 36x48 gives you an 8x10 dimension (645), while 24x36 gives you the wider 8x12 (35mm) dimension. Maybe Canon is realizing that a DSLR doesn't have to correspond to any specific film format. They're going to make their sensors whatever size they want, dammit!
"Uh, I shoot Canon 35mm digital...no wait, the sensor's pretty big, but....uhhhh....wait...son of a!"

Huh. Do idle rumors usually get deleted shortly after posting? Perhaps only to lend 'credence' to them...
ah but wait untill you get a letter/email from canon suggesting you delete this thread ..
edit: btw. ISO 6400 sounds good to me. although the camera will probably cost 12000 euro or something ...
now if they would release a 1D mark III with the 5D chip ... (what would be the same as the cropped 1ds mark II suggested here ...(

It makes sense to me. If your reaching the limits of a 35mm sensor, the only option is to make it bigger. I would upgrade to it.
And then where does it stop?
Don't believe the rumour and if its true it just proves what a hopeless mess Canons current strategy is. Do we really need a fourth sensor format using the 35mm system?
For crying out loud Canon, just pick two damn formats and stick with them. That would still leave them with double everybody else. With hundreds of thousands of lucrative sales potential in a two grand body, why are they even thinking of an ultra-small niche TEN grand one. Baffles me, it really does.
If Canon could do some mechanical high class engineering (which anyone that saw the folding hardtop of the new Volve C70 can imagine is possible) or is willing to go with a fixed pellicle mirror design, a 36*36mm sensor would be a fully valid option.
Square would be useless. The dimensions of the 645 MF chips, 36x48, are ideally suited to the professional publication industry. But all new lenses? Come on! Then it is not a 1DsMKII replacement, it is a whole new platform to invest in.
I think how much larger should be the question. In order to cover TRUE 36x24, the sensor has to be like 37x 25. Today, 1Ds2 has 17.2M total pixels but only 16.7M is effective.
If Canon are making a MF chip, then it will be in a medium format back to fit to Hasselblad or something. The concept of a larger sensor in the EOS range is a a joke. I think that the idea is that Canon will start to compete in the MF back market and MAY at some future stage offer lenses to fit MF cameras. This rumor has nothing to do with the EOS system.
