Thank you VERY much as I speak German, but haven't utilized it in quite some time now (gave me some practice, especially with those wonderful words such as Lichtempfindlichkeitsstufeneinstellungen) - - meaning something such as the "adjustment steps of the light sensitivity" ( ISO) Nonetheless, when the 20D was first introduced, I first saw the "rumor info" about it on a German site, and it was all 100% valid. Unfortunately, I don't remember the site, but it was a reliable one. This one I can't say much about...
Depending on the price point, this makes quite a bit of sense. They put a camera into your hands that can use all your current lenses (at a lower Mp), but gives you incentive to buy a new line of lenses which they can choose to build or not depending upon how well the body sells.
The size of the sensor is no longer the cost inhibitor that it once was. The sensor would be 22Mp all the time, but the circle of light from a standard EF lens would fall on only 12Mp worth of sensor real estate. The rest is black (0,0,0) and could be cropped automatically by the new processor.

If the current diameter is the smallest size possible for the current sensor size, then yes. I am guessing that it is a bit larger than necessary and that is probably dictating the max sensor size they are considering.

One additional thought...it would be very easy for the new processor to detect the type of lens that was attached (EF, EF-S, larger) and automatically crop as appropriate.
Can you really see Canon just releasing the new 85/1.2L and then having it not be the preimer lens choice for new 1Ds3 customers? Making a lens line with a larger circle of illumination is a daunting task, and I just don't see Canon interested in doing that for a camera dedicated for such a small pro market. Heck- they won't even put any R&D into a decent wide angle that tens of thousands would already give their eye teeth for.
Hmmm, let's think about that. First, what would be the benefit of having a larger sensor - isn't medium format just about dead already, killed by 35mm? OK, forgetting that, how about the technological limitations. If making a FF sensor is so expensive and difficult that only canon can do it (and then only on very expensive bodies), why would they push the envelope beyond 36x24? A better question is why they would replace a 36x24 16MP image with a 12MP one? Wouldn't it be more logical for an EF lens user to at least get 16MP images?
I think more likely the "special lenses" that can take advantage of the 22mp are some of their primes.....35L, maybe a new 50L, 85L, 135l, and possibly a new 200 1.8L at some point. I dont think any of their zooms will be able to take advantage of 22mp, but these primes are much more likely.
Why would someone buy this over a current medium format digital back? Sure, you'd get a jack of all trades (sort of), but likely a master of none. I'd rather keep a 35mm digital for when it is appropriate, and a digital back for when it is appropriate (not that I own a digital back).

My salesman at my favorite photo gear shop also told me that the next canon would have a larger than 24x36mm sensor. Though he was kidding, but reading this post, it "could" be true.
This info was posted on DPReview a week or so ago by somebody who supposedly saw/handled the camera. The thread was deleted by the powers that be with no explanation that I know of. Could mean there's something to this (unless of course, the German site got the info from the post over on DPReview!).
