I think this leak could be a true one to be honest, ok, the specs might be a little off, but given it's released on Nikon's big day, a Canon spoiler would be an dirty little marketting trick to pull.
The people who think megapixels are the be-all end-all of camera specifications will be really confused by a Rebel having more megapixels than a 1D2N costing six times as much.

Ever day consumer: Why is that camera bigger, more expensive and only 8MP?
Photog: Well it’s a pro-body
Ever day consumer: But it only as 8MP, mine has 10
Photog: Yes, well it has weather sealed body, can take 8.5FP, better AF & metal body. A very fast and rugged DSLR
Ever day consumer: But why only make it 8, why not like mine 10MP, I mean, looks like I'm getting a way better deal with my 10MP vs. the 8MP

Just heard from an impeccable source - new 350D (Rebel XT) Replacement soon to be announced -
called the 400D, 10MP, 9 Point AF, 2.5" Screen etc. Available in Black & Silver as per 350D.
That's all the specs I have - 10MP is the interesting one.....where does this leave the 30D ??
Canon has always avoided having the numeral "4" in their models - so this is unlikely.
However, if this is true, much would depend on the high ISO performance. I really doubt a Rebel replacement would be exciting and certainly lacks the features of its competitors D80 and Alpha
This seems plausible, but I'm not sure if Canon would put a 10MP sensor in their lower end DSLR. Unless they have some kind of new body in store to replace the 30D, why would they put a higher MP sensor in their lower end camera? If it DOES sell for less, a lot of people getting into photography would be fooled by the 2 extra MP, and buy that instead. I can't count how many times people have asked me how many MP my camera was, just because its big and bulky compared to their point and shoot. What's even worse, is that they claim that my camera takes GREAT images, which it does, though I wish they would give some credit to the photographer! But thats another story for another thread...
I personally don't care if someone thinks their point and shoot is better than my camera because theirs has more megapixels. If they think they have a better camera, that's fine with me. So what? I don't see any purpose in trying to convince them that their camera isn't as good as they think.
It's plausible that the next 350D series body could have 10 megapixels. And anyone who thinks that megapixels are the main factor in camera quality more than likely wouldn't be looking at a 30D anyway.
I suppose if some unknowledgeable people are judging your professional competence by the amount of megapixels your camera has, it would be a problem. You wouldn't get many referrals from people who think you have crappy equipment. But for most people who aren't pro's, I can't see why other people's opinions would be a concern.
It's for sure that Canon must equal the 10Mp of Nikon and Sony at a similiar, or lower, price point-that's competition. I agree that software is the path for improvements/ upgrades since sensor technology (for a given size) is just about at the theoretical maximum for noise and resolution.
We appear to be approaching a leveling off of innovation in body/sensor design due to physical constants-somewhat like lens design. That said mature products and manufacture processes should mean the same performance (and a few more features) at a lower price.

I'll bet you'll regret saying that one day
New technologies are always just around the corner, and digital imaging (with respect to sensor design) is still very much in it's infancy. We should expect to see (almost) zero noise sensors at super high ISOs in the not too distant future, with layed foveonesque sensors maximising current lens resolving power.
The next step forward will have to be in optical design; maybe new materials/liquids will push sensor design in a new direction. Who knows?
One thing I'm sure of though - we ain't nowhere near the limit yet!
Organic sensors may be the next big thing. Organic semiconductors are already being produced and they potentially offer unlimited variety and functionality. Organic molecules can be tailored to a specific task due to the fact you can attach any sort of dopant you need. I'm guessing another 10 years though.
Also plastics are getting better optically all the time. My last job was with a fibre optic company and we had already achived a 100 fold decrease in attenuation of signal in plastic fibres which have many advantages over glass. I can also imagine oneday seeing plastic lenses as being widespread and since they are plastic they can be injection moulded say into any desired shape, making complex aspherical lens production much easier. Don't forgt attenuation is not an issue with a lens as the optical path is very small. Also you can dope plastics with a far greater variety of substances than glass again allwoing for tailored optical properies. Maybe in 2020 we will have a 600 f/2.8L IS that only weighs 3kg, made entirely from plastic lenses and some form of spider silk polymer body which is tougher than kevlar but lighter than CF. Materials science is undergoing rapid progress.

The shrewd photog knows that all every day consumers operate under the general belief that the bigger a camera is, the better pictures it takes. This is why Canon has made the XT smaller, to clairify the upgrade path.
I have no idea why I'm actually reading this thread. . . .
I called my friend in Japan, he works for Canon and he told me everything about new releases, icluding lenses. Ha, and I won't tell.
Theoretical question: can this thread can be any more silly?
After my post not likely, but I'm sure we have some brains here . . .
18-400 F2.8 L IS? only in your dreams. For one thing the price would be much higher than $1290 and the lens would be to heavy which would discourage most from even considering.

Photo store: Yes, isn't it amazing! You are holding one of the technological gems of our times. That fine instrument in your hands, less than a $1000 dollars, blows away this 8MP camera that the pros use for all of those gorgeous 20x30s that you see everywhere and wish you could do yourself! Get two of them and you can make 40x60s to cover your living room wall, and extent up onto the ceiling!
Every day customer: I"ll get four, two for my spouse! Thanks soooo much!

I just heard from an impeccable source that Canon's also releasing a 18-400mm f/2.8L IS zoom by the end of this year. The MSRP is $1290, we'll see how it sells. An interesting lens indeed. I'll have to make sure it gets added to my collection.
Does that price include a soft pouch and lens hood?
