p.10 #1 · One Light Set ups

Damn there is some amazing shots here, I'm have the opertunity to get a AB 800 used and wonder if this is the route to go. I have no experience what so ever with studio lighting but would like to be getting better results than I am with my 430EX. Can you use the 430 together with the AB 800? Any reson why you would not?

Technically this was a 2 light shot BUT the hairlight is cut off by the composition so it's basically a one light shot. 3x4 SB and a reflector for fill.

This is about the only single light shot I have readily available. Single AB800 with a grid. Sorry about the model...... I was all I had available.

Haven't seen too many product / table top shots in this thread, and since that's what I like I thought I would share this one. This was inspired by the car ads that have the red outline of a car (Nissan...Accura...?) that is drawn by a man with a huge paintbrush. In this shot you can see more than just that outline, but if you crop just above the tires the outline you are left with is similar to that ad.

Shot with a single Dyna-lite in a 2'x3' softbox, positioned just a few inches above the car and pointed slightly forward (into camera). I also had a white bouncecard with a hole in it attached to my lens for a little extra fill. I did some other shots with additional Dyna-lites with grids (10* and 20*) on the front and rear sides, which filled in the front and rear some but I didn't like those as much as this one.

Head with 7" standard reflector from right. Scrim between head and subject to form the front highlight on subject. Spill from the head behind the far edge of the scrim hits the white background full strength. Foamcore on the left side forms the side highlight on the subject. This is a variation of that single light technique from the Montizambert article mentioned earlier in this thread.

What is the best way to connect my 580EX to an umbrella for on location shoots? Sorry if this is a silly question just haven't seen any expamples of how it's done.

If you have a light stand then you may want to use one of these:

I have one and it works, but I find that I have to mask the metal plate (where the it touches the pins of the flash) with sticky tape in order to make my flash work (received trigger signal from my other speedlight). I am wondering if the metal plate is shortting the pins.

These are all single light sources. It ranges from a 420EX with an umbrella to either a AB400 or AB800 with a medium softbox.

Just picked up a Photoflex 45" White umbrella with black backing and adapter. I have a couple questions, how far should I put the flash from the umbrella. My last few shots I had the umbrealla as far away as possible, maybe an inche or 2 closer. Likewise, what coverage should the flash be at? 50mm? 35mm? 28mm? Here is a picture of my fresh umbrella and adapter im the messy corner of my room haha.

Really stunning work!
I assume you're just using the modeling light or other such non-overpowering source?

Until I read this thread I had considered some difficult lighting choices, Many of them very expensive.

I have a 20d and am interesting in getting an AlienBee 800 unit. Thing is I'm not exactly sure of how it connects to my camera. Could I get one of you guys with a 20d (or other Canon camera) to post your setups. I probably will not be able to afford wireless at first so I would appreciate solutions both wired and wireless.

Thanks
