one AB800 with softbox at a steep 45, rotated to kick light behind the model....
the $12 4x8 tileboard on the ground not only saves my paper but it kicks a nice amount of light back up and makes it look a little less abstract and... seamless. it kind of anchors it to reality and makes it feel more like a set.
i'll retire it for some plexi soon i think.
i really enjoy the posts here - thanks to everyone for sharing!

Philip: I am really interested in how you created the ambient light for the background of this shot using a single Alien Bee. It's simply fantastic and would love to use it as an example for some of the work I am doing now.
If you could either explain it a little more in depth as to what is happening in this shot or if you could draw a small diagram of your lighting setup, it would be much appreciated.
Flash/large softbox set up camera right with a gold reflector on camera left.
Wonderful thread, guys... It was solely responsible for me forgoing a $2000 - multi-light WL purchase...specifically seeing what Gaskins has done with one light.

If I remember right, this was shot with one AB800, camera right and a 42inch gold reflector just to the left of the subject, out of frame.
I am learning so much from this thread, as I am thinking of doing the same thing this gent is doing. a 1/2 light set up - however was told not to go to crazy as the more lights the harder it is to deal with. (Sigh) I wish there was a local here in Orlando I could learn off of! So much easier to learn off of other photographers!
Hi Chris..I loved the simplicity and mobility of your setup. Would you mind expolaining how you setup the shot inrealtion to the camera and flash angle please. Cheers

Jason, i always LOVE your work. Are these done with the standard reflector or was there some type of mod used?
Thanks man!!! Appreciate the love! Haha... hopefully in the coming month I will have lots of new stuff to share. This whole school thing keeps me busy and not shooting. Blah!
Anyways, to answer your question....
#1 was shot with a B800 outfitted with a 35" octabox, positioned camera left.
#2 was shot with a Canon 430EX being bounced off a silver reflector positioned camera right.
#3 was shot with a B800 outfitted with a 22" beauty dish, positioned very slightly to camera right and up.
I am joining the one light setup thread with this on location shot... I think I am going to love this Vagabond system, I just need more willing subjects.

Very nice and dramatic scene, the sky works very well! Can you tell us what is your set up based on?
Thanks!
Vagabond V150, AlienBee AB400 at 3/4 power 1/160 sec f8 ISO 100, 42" silver umbrella, (60" shoot thru is on order) and lots of weight to hold that thing down in the wind... I had seen a similar shot done for a high school senior I was trying to replicate it.
Edited by DLutz on Sep 25, 2006 at 05:04 AM GMT (Reason: added umbrella and weight)

I'm not a professional but here is one of my picture using an Excalibur 6400 with 37" SP Studio Systems Octagonal Foldable Softbox, and 40x60" silver reflector.
