single light camera right: 7' photoflex octa on a elinchrom 400bx at full power about 5-6 feet away from model. I think I ended up with f/14 for this shot. Also had a gelled light camera left but I turned that off because it wasn't adding to the shot.
I'm thinking I should have used some reflectors to even out the light a bit so I wouldn't have burned out the highlights on her dress. C&C welcome
Wow...very nice Jon. I love how clean and crisp the image is and the way that they face is lite nicely with it gently falling out around the shirt. Although I don't have any studio lighting, I still can appreciate a great photograph .
you guys are flooring me with these examples of one light setups. it gives me inspiration to shoot while knowing that i dont have to put down the $$ for lots of lights.
my main question is, im loving how your AB800 photos are turning out. very very soft and classy. but the question is, with a ab800 + softbox attached to it, is there anyway to mimick this effect with a 580ex??

not sure, but i think there were some pics on this thread using a flash & a small softbox.
Well, you can of course shoot good portraits with a flash and a small softox. But since the size of the light in relation to the distance of the object determes how soft you lights is, you'd have a hard time getting something comparable. A 580EX does not only not put out enough power to use a bigger softbox, it's flash bulb is also built into a reflector and distributes the light much more diretional than the "free standing" flash tube of a good studio strobe.

You might want to check out http://www.gerardmaas.net and http://www.gerardmaas.com .
actually went through all 40+ pages in one night lol
amazing photos and learned alot. found this page after ordering a AB800 + SB + umbrella .. also got reflectors from elsewhere. cant wait to experiment =)
quick question to anyone that can answer. i also have the 430EX and bought the swivel adapter to put on a light stand from ebay. Will the 430ex work by using that and shooting into an umbrella for outdoor shots? I seen some examples with some using 550/580ex but not sure if the 430EX will work same way or not. Thanks
