Nice shots of a very tolerant cat. This is not a critique per say, but it might be nice to experiment with an umrella that has a lining or one that has a difuser to help lessen the impact of the umbrella veins in the eye catch light. Maybe not, but just a thought. Nice shots and perspective though.
This one is my favorite.

Thanks for the wonderful and inspiring photos. What kind of octabox arre you using on your ab800s and where can I get one? I love the effect.
thanks
skrike
It's just the 35" octabox that Alien Bee sells on their website. I'm sure there are better quality octaboxes out there, but this one has served me well and was cost efficient. I would highly recommend it.
I believe Emilee is without a doubt my favorite model on this site. Simply one of the most beautiful girls I've seen. Congratulations on such a wonderful job.
TJ, you've contributed enough "samples" to start your own book between this thread and your colored backdrop thread. Thanks for keeping the thread alive.

Hahaha, well I will be sure to pass the word along to her. I've got a lot more of her to be edited and put up on my flickr and official site. Plus, I'm finishing up the second part of a fashion shoot with her and Siri this Sunday. So I'll be sure to post some of those for y'all. Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement. I appreciate it.
Which lens was used in these shots? I think these posts should include that. Light setup is great to learn in looking at examples but focal length is equally important. Well for a newbie like me it is...lol.
This looks great. You should post a lighting diagram. Very nice balance. Highlights just on the cusp of being blown but they're not. Nice shots. #2 is out of focus though. Too bad, it's a nice feel.
Regarding your comment on what focal length lenses are used for particular shots...
You can use most lenses to get these shots. It's a matter of how close you are to the subject that affects the composition of the subject in the frame and the relation of the subject to the surrounding environment.
The wider the lens, the closer you need to be to fill the frame with the subject and the more background/environment you will include. The longer the lens, the farther away you need to be to fill the frame with your subject and the less background/environment will be included.
That said, I would suspect that most shots of people are done with lens focal lengths between 35mm and 200mm with lenses in the range of 50-135 being the most popular.
Dragonfly (aka Josh Hudson) did a nice lens and perspective tutorial a couple months ago. See if you can find it by searching for him as the author.

These forums on here are an absolute Godsend. I love this place! I ordered my Canon Digital Rebel XT today. Going with the kit lens, 18-55mm to start, learn from it and go from there. I have a nice studio space and strobe lights that I also purchased. I'll be posting soon for guidance as soon as I build up some shots. My mate Amanda agreed to help by being my victim....lol. Stay tuned.
