It is an excellent TOOL for the serious shooter.

I have an ipod for amusement.

There are too many toys.

EB, what are the minor and not-so-minor issues you found using the unit?

What I expect it to be:

A - An unexpensive, reliable, notebook replacement, when it comes to dumping my cards for reuse after shooting. Not because I wouldn't carry a MacBook Pro instead. Because I can't afford a MacBook Pro, and the most basic, needed function of a notebook for me while shooting, is just storing my photos untill I can process them. Tailoring my needs down, all I need is a portable HD with CF card ( and not even 7-in-1 ) connector, for dumping photos while shooting, and trusting I won't loose a single photo.

B - A secondary storage unit, being a 3rd backup ( Desktop HD, CD Backups and this unit for really important stuff ).

C - A Portable Storage Device, for taking data from my desktop to my school computers, for processing at classes, and returning home.

It also seems very simple electronically, and easy to open up and clean when needed. It would be very cool to have also, MP3 playing, photo preview, etc. But if the screen is merelly 3inches big, it will still leave me needy ( my palm pilots do ). When I review my photos, I like doing that on a big screen, at least 12", so, a notebook is called for, and I will have to buy one on the long run. What I need, is simply, an HD that works on batteries without the need of a card reader, USB cable, and that allows me minimal operations for ME starting the operation, and ME seeing it finished successfully. A sound happy Beep Beep to say it ended, and a sad Beeeeeeeeeeep to say it went wrong, would be a welcomed bonus, to leave it away in a backpack while continuing to work on another card.

But again, notebooks allways are best left on a base station. I'll take a beach fashion photoshoot for example. I like to walk around light with the models. No cables, no teethering, just me, them, the assistant and the camera. I prefer to leave everything heavier behind. I won't carry a notebook on a backpack and open it every time I need to dump photos. I review, while shooting, on the camera. Once I dump, I pretty much forget those photos, even if dumped on a notebook. What I need is something to save me from trips forth and back 2 miles of sand, for dumping cards. It has happened on a beach fashion workshop, and allways you have 4 more students on the notebook, waiting to dump their files. That took an awfull load of time.

From what I can see on the site:

It seems the control buttons on the HD80 unit need to be handled carefully, with clean hands ( no water, no sand, actually, leave it away from those inside a backpack pocket ), or it will break or jam.

The batteries will make it heavier, but not more than an old SONY Walkman. But being AA, it means I could simply have an extra pair everywhere, bought on any store, provided they have the kind of power it will need.

Don't drop it, it will break.

The HD is likelly to heat up, and burn your legs, when left turned on for a long while inside your pants, just like any notebook HD. Or any notebook for that matter, that was an issue with my recently deceased Toshiba notebook.

Does anyone have anything else to add, or confirm/deny those fears I have over the unit? I mean, if that's all, I will still buy it, when I get the money, which is sooner by the day. Otherwise, if there's something to worry about, I would like to know.

Now, things that do bother me, about Hyperdrive. The site is totally non-responsive. I was happy to get a reply from Sanho after some days, from my question. But on Febuary 21st, it still said they would backorder till the 20th :| The ONLY thing that makes me trust they will deliver, are the many testimonies the unit is great, and they are honest. But there are also testimonies saying UPS pretty much sucks, and deliveries are sometimes also delayed :| Truth be said, Sanho could use a bit more work on their website and on consumer care to create trust amongst the clients. I would be much happier to see HD80 units being sold on B&H and being able to ask any friend visiting NYC to buy one for me

the HD- if it ever got hot enough to burn your leg would have auto shutdown long before that there are temp sensors in the drive itself that prevent over heat. the processor was the leg burner in laptops. the HD80 will shutdown generally 30 sec after its done doing its xfr or with no input from the user after boot to conserve power. its sort of a pain but it is a good power conserver. just switch it off and on again when you decide to actually use it. it seems they understand human nature a little. you know turn it on and forget it and blow the batteries out. each card transfer generally reqs a turn off then on for it to boot and sense what state its in when you choose the auto transfer option.
pwr must be off for it to go to charge
if the usb is hooked up it acts like a external drive and stays on. it will run off the battery if the pwr plug is not in or will run off thr PP if it is but will not charge while in. if you leave the usb plug in with it off it does not charge the battery until the usb plug is pulled.
no biggies just need to knows

JessicaLuchesi --The HD80 does #A exceptionally well, that is what it was designed for. For #B, I would suggest you get another hard drive for your desktop rather than using the HD80. These days 200-300gb internal hard drives can be gotten for a song ($40-80 after rebates). You wouldn't want to occupy the HD80 with backup data. There have been several threads on this forum regarding external storage solutions that you might find interesting. For #C, it is the same as #A but the data is different. For smaller amounts of data, I typically use either a CF card or memory stick to transport data from one location to another.

If you are concerned with delivery of the HD80, I would have it sent to someone in the US who can then physically deliver it to you on their next trip to Brazil. However, my last couple of transactions "overseas" have been surprisingly good. In fact, the items I've ordered or sent got to me or the intended individual faster than what is typical in domestic delivery. It is clearly not like the old days. I'm beginning to ease up on my paranoia/insecurities when it comes to international shipment. Believe me, that is a difficult task for an old fart like me.

I'm right there with jhom & sjms. This unit will do the one job it's meant for very, very well. JessicaLuchesi, it will fit the bill for your A & C uses perfectly. It's not feather-light, but IMHO isn't all that heavy & has a belt pouch included, so you have portability, one-hand operation, and no leg-burning.

The limitations like keep sand/dirt/water away, don't drop it, etc. apply to all of these tpyes of units since they mostly all have a mechanical hard drive of some sort & electronics don't get along with moisture too well.

I have dealt with both eastgear & hyperdrive and have had no trouble with either. I would venture to guess the word is out on these units & they are having trouble keeping up with demand. I would also expect that to be a temporary situation.

I could have it sent to a friend on his hotel, on his next trip to the US, and he could bring it. But what if I have it sent to his hotel, and the unit goes on backorder? With all the shipment hassle I saw on other forums, that option is not much reliable, if I can't get it to his hands, on the timeframe he will be in NYC. I will just buy it, and have it delivered here at home. I just hope it will come around nicelly, even if I have to handle customs.

Now, about HDs and backups. Well, I do CD backups ( usually doubled ), of all my photos, and also, Alamy Submissions. Right now, I'm in such a tight budget, I would have to give up the HD80 to get a second internal HD, or an external 300Gb unit. My current HD has only 80Gb, and the photography partition, 40Gb. Also, hardware in Brazil costs usually the double as in the US. A US$80 HD could easilly go towards US$150,00 in the local stores... and our currency is worth 1/2 of what the US dollar is, so, it's not THAT affordable

Not really a problem tho. I just plan of keeping a mirror of my current workbench ( usually, 16Gb of photos ) on the HD80, just in case. Mostly, because the CDs are burned either with RAW material, and finished photos, not with "work in progress", and some photos with more retouching, usually take some more time to be worked on. When I can afford it, I will look after an external RAID or something. But for now, the HD80 will do it fine, even the 40Gb unit.

I have 2 hd80's now, I would not worry about the shipping, when I ordered they were in stock and 3 days later it was here in the UK. It does what is says on the tin and you cant ask for more than that.
It might not have all the bells and whistles (screens, MP3's etc etc) of other units, but you have to sacrifice battery life and speed, I borrowed a friends flashtrax and it was useless and needed to be charged every 5 mins.

Mine are packed and ready to go to Asia for 30 days and I have no worries that they will let me down.

Sorry for thedelayed response, but I can't get any decent charge from the integrated charger to run the unit for more than a few minutes. I am conditioning some other batteries in a real battery charger.

it takes roughly 240 minutes for a charge. it counts up on the display. and yes since it is a delta T type charger a portable Delta V type charger will give a better charge overall. but we all generally carry those for the same 2500mah or better batteries we use in our flashes. impatient lot that we are we also go for the fast charge international model right?

The supplied cells are not conditioned so charging terminates in about 10 minutes on either HD80. As far as I can determine there is virtually no trickle charge, since leaving them on overnight does not help much. I have some older cells that work fine, but wanted to test total transfer capacity with newer cells. Apparently the HD80 has a high curent requirement, so any appreciable impedance in the cells is unacceptable. I think the cells will be fine after running multiple refresh cylcles on a BC-900.

I just ordered one, so in case I run into this problem: what's a BC-900?

Hey EB and Visch1, thanks for the charging info. I've also just recently purchased the Hyperdrive and noticed a charging issue right away. The first set of supplied Sanyo 2300's only charged for about 30 minutes or so and so I disconnected the AC and plugged it in again right away and it went for another 50 minutes.

The second set of Sanyo's charged for over 250 minutes on the first go at which time I became concerned and pulled the plug. The manual indicates the charger should shut off after 4 hours (240 minutes) so I wasn't sure if I was having a problem or not. The manual isn't really clear if it's "around" 4 hours or should shut off at "exactly" 4 hours.

It never dawned on me to try conditioning the batteries first in my other charger (dohhh!) so appreciate the tip. I kinda suspected it might be a battery issue so we'll see what happens. Thanks again and cheers!

P.S. Unit is working flawlessly otherwise and I'm astounded at the transfer speeds. I went with the bare chassis for mine and installed a Samsung 80gig figuring that if anything went wrong with the hard drive it would be easier and simpler to deal with it locally. My supplier here swaps drives over the counter for the first year.

Are you aware of how to turn on the CRC while transferring? it is not an auto feature and must be manually applied for each card. it also increases the transfer time of each file by about 200-300% depending on the file type. but for the paranoid types its a good thing as it chks the checksum before and after transfer.

it looks like this while doing the transfer(it will flicke in process)
http://i.pbase.com/g3/89/44489/3/56758190._H3Z5363.jpg

put card in
power on
within 7 sec move jog dial over to left (towards SD card slot and release)
it'll do its thing

if there is 1 bit difference it will let you know

thats kinda silly... i bet you dont use every function on your camera, direct print button?

a possible charging issue, on the other hand, is important to know about...
