Same here, but that pouch attaches to my belt harness on the Runner II, so, when shooting outdoors, I MAY use it there I'm pretty happy with the unit, I just see it as a giant proxy memory card, and I guess is better than carrying 30 2GB cards :P
Git it as well in Montreal with all the promised gifts: batteries, car charger, pouch. Purchased a Toshiba 60 gig with a 16mg buffer. hey this gizmo fly like heck. I had 2 gb flash card with 189 files. It copied in 2min.30sec.
I am impressed and very satisfied.

I'm still waiting for my unit to come in :-(
I have one concern though: with the file structure that my 5D creates, how does the hyperdrive detect the pictures buried within? And does it copy CR2 as well as jpg?
I guess they could improve transfer speeds towards the computer, the unit is very slow on that regard, but considering that once at a computer station, you should have all the time in the world to dump all photos, it's not something that's gonna spoil the unit. I did a test of downloading the same card over and over and over to the unit, a 256Mb card filled with RAW files, and now, transferring everything to the computer. It's taking a while. I wonder how many hours it would take if I had filled the whole 60Gb up.

It copies anything. It just clones whatever it finds within your card, creates a folder named CARDXXXX.UHS in the HD, and copy everything it finds on your card inside that folder. It has a limit on how many subfolders it can actually browse, but the limit is as high as 255 ( I think ). So, if you get a new camera with a .jjy format, it will copy that too. It's limits are related to how the card is formatted, the card size, etc.

So far my experience has been…getting my Hyperdrive 80 shipped three weeks after they charged my credit card. Three weeks old, I am getting Error #11 messages on two different Lexar CF cards after copying about 60 of the 80 RAW images. I reformatted both cards shot some 80 images on both cards. I tried copying again and I still got Error #11 messages. My unit cannot copy from any of two different CF cards if they have more than 5-10 images.
I phoned 4X and emailed 4X Tech Support over two weeks – the only response has been Auto Reply saying, “Thank you for contacting us! We have received your inquiry and are assigning it to a representative. You can expect to receive a response from us within one business day.”
BUT NO REPLY!! Enough for Customer Service…I totally feel ripped off. "

I think you meant PayPal.
To get an account go to www.paypal.com and select the sign up.
Regarding protection there is a limit, but I think it is $1000. Also, you need to provide a source of funds for you paypal account. You can use a bank account or a credit card. If you use a credit card then you credit card company also backs up the transaction.

I wonder how many of these units have been sold? I've not seen any mention of much in the way of problems with the unit itself mentioned here. Moving it a bit off topic, but if you use google earth, you can see the guys condo. I know where he lives . (Can't find the China location, though.) Anyway, I'm happy its moved from there, its at Lousville now, but I wasn't too bothered before.

7 different 1, 2 and 4 gb sandisk cards seem to work in addition to 1 ridata pro 2gb sd card. all of of these had more the 100 raw images in them. my suggestion is to try another non lexar type card. regretfully as of late and that is in the past 3 years lexar has intro'd "propriatary technologies" that seem to be interfering with basic function and interoperability of the cards and to universally interface with all the products they are designed to work with. they have become an issue that forced me to remove them as a viable source of reliable product. it would be much better if they would just try to produce a good card that didn't hang on marketing buzz words like Wa and Lt that require additional code to be intro'd to the camera itself. their $80 readers are becoming blatent exercises from the vertical marketing playbook to use said "technologies". beautiful as they are just aint worth it.

I've had two units. The first was the predecessor, PD7X and now the HD80 (aka PD70X). Both units have been very reliable. From what I have read here as well as on other forums, these units are very reliable. I would not hesitate in buying another or recommending them to others. On occasion you hear about a problem. Most recently, the complaints seem to center around customer service and delivery. I assume that is part of growing pains and adjustments. For a long while, US buyers had to rely on eastgear.com out of Singapore. My experience with them has been excellent. Now the units are being distributed in the US by hyperdrive.com. Apparently, they are having problems with delivery and customer service. Although this may affect what people think about the company, I hope the growing pains doesn't detract from an otherwise excellent product that is quite useful for many shooters.
Given that, this thread is well past done. I think most substantitive comments have been made and answered.
It was sent from Sunnyvale on Friday, got to me today, Monday mid-day, in the sticks in UK. Well done UPS. I'had to pay an additional £5.01 import VAT plus £11.00 ups brokerage surcharge - UPS, you can go off people... costing twice as much to collect as what you were collecting.
Anyway, The unit itself looks fine. Well pleased - it seems to be of reasonable quality for the price, and the batteries - Sanyo - are pretty good, and very important its a UK charger, with UK plug.
I was looking for a better PSD lately, and after some research decided on the Nexto CF. It's at least as fast loading from CF to the unit as the Hyperdrive, a lot smaller, faster downloading to the computer because of the firewire interface, and with a 100Gb Fujitsu drive allows me to download 40Gb on one charge. I got the external battery, and can fill up the whole 100Gb easily on one charge.
The Epson P-2000 has a nice screen, but if I need to really see the image and do something with it before I get home, I generally take my laptop and a couple of external HD's.
There is no US distributor/sales outlet as far as I know for the Nexto, but I'm in Canada so it has to come over the border anyway. I got it through Australia in 3 days with altogether excellent service.
I'm going to China for a month and now have two units that will allow me to shoot raw the whole way.
I still shoot a fair amount of film, but travel is now almost all digital due to the hassles of dragging 200 rolls through often suspect security systems. I haven't had trouble with HD's at 13,000ft.
the Nexto looks like it has an internal LiIon battery, and the external battery pack accessory is another larger rechargable LiIon battery. So far with the AA power, the Hyperdrive/Compactdrive is a category-killer as far as I'm concerned.
Yes, the Nexto uses LiIon batteries. That's part of what makes it half the weight and size. Even with the external attached, it's still a lot smaller and lighter, and with the external you never have to recharge until you're back home. No fiddling with chargers, extra batteries etc. Smaller and lighter (and simpler) again.
Then, in about an hour the whole Nexto drive is backed up onto your home drive. No other storage device is that fast.
True enough. If download to a computer is the primary factor, then firewire or an optimized USB2 device would be an improvement. And the AA batteries definitely add bulk to the hyperdrive, though not necessarily weight as they can live in the flash until needed, or it can be the storage spot for your spare batteries.
I'm on a mission to get rid of extra chargers. Just a pet peeve as they annoy me to no end when travelling. With everything AA powered (flashlight, flash, ipod, PSD, etc) I can bring one AA charger or just use alkalines as I see fit. YMMV. Luckily there are a thousand devices to choose from, all different.
Nexto CF isn't that bad with power... When traveling w/o access to electricity, you can fashion some simple Radioshack parts/connectors and recharge either internal Li-ion, or external Li-ion, with regular AAs (Lithium Energizers are even better). Will last you forever. Check here:
