If they keep the same sensor and just uprgade the screen etc, then it won't be a 30d or 35d. It'll be a 20dN.
If they keep an 8mp in there next line of cameras, they are saying that 8mp is here for at least another 18months in their biggest line of cameras--and that would make it problematic for them to upgrade the sensor in the XT next, because it would have a better sensor than the 20d.
If they change the name and keep the sensor, then I expect a lot more than just a bigger LCD--like better autofocus, many more AF points, better metering, a better processor, faster shooting, spot meter, and bigger buffer.
So, if this is true, then the 20dN is being released because the next release is only another 6 months away and will be significant (and they feel they have to release SOMETHING now).
We are all adults, and we can all evaluate the information for ourselves. For your sake I hope you are 100% right, so that you can gloat after all the trash postings!
This place used to be pretty civilized. It seems like too many a**holes have migrated here from DPReview. It is starting to take on the same tone.

But will the original poster apologise if he has been talking rubbish this whole time I wonder?

Again, how does that make any sense when Canon has no answer for the D200? People are gobbling up the D200 now, which let me remind you is 10 megapixels, 5 fps, 2.5 inch LCD, 11 point AF, and for $1600 (body). I mean the thing is back ordered everywhere. Canon would be retarded not to at least match its specs. Believe me they're not going to get a single 20D user to upgrade if the camera is nothing new, they're not going to pull new users away from the D200, and I as a 300D user wouldn't upgrade to this new camera either if it's that close to the 20D. I'd save my pennies for a better day....Show more →
Canon finalized the designs on the 30D (or whatever) before the D200 was announced. Development cycles take a while, and I doubt that Canon can respond directly in any other way than pricing.
But they do a lot more than develop one camera at a time, and they certainly try to anticipate contingencies. There's no way they were caught off guard by the D200. And if they make an announcement on the 22nd that still gives them a few months before its release. Unless there's some wild new technology in it odds are it's just a matter of stretching and squeezing things they already make quite easily. Again they would not be a successful company if they were habitually locked into a design that had been outcompeted before its very release.
what would the price point for the 3d be? Keep in mind that the 20D (and whatever takes its place) fullfills 80 or 90% on the need for a highspeed camera for most shooters. Those who need more are usually willing to pay more of the 1D.
You can't help when some people do not have the civility to let others indulge their own interests. You would think that if a topic didn't interest someone they would stay away, not pester those trying to discus things.

I think the title says it all for itself. I've come into information suggesting the following. Whether Canon will choose to release them all during Photokina remains unknown. However, the following is what I've found out so far.
30D: Digic 3, 10mpx
3D: Digic 3, looks similar to 5D on the outside, FF, priced between 5D and 1DS RS
1DS RS: Pellicle system, reminiscent of the 1N RS. 5fps on the full 18mpx, 8fps (on a crop maybe?), 18mpx, not built as well as the 1DS Mk2, Digic 3, priced somewhere in the $6,000+ range.
10-22 mk2: Better build, to eliminate some wobbliness.
40/1.4 or 1.2
17-40L to be discontinued
Italicized parts = not 100% solid, but pretty darn close....Show more →
I can't disagree with anything you say here because I don't know what's going to happen next week. What I can say is that it sounds disappointing in so many ways I hope your're wrong about most of it. Sorry about that.
I don't care about the 20d replacement (30d, 35d, or whatever) or any 1.6x crop cameras (goes for ef-s lenses too).
The 40mm prime? Hmmm. I just don't see a need for this at this point, but lenses are nice to have in any length I guess.
3D - I have a feeling that it won't have the 1 series build quality (like the EOS 3 doesn't), nor will it have a 100% VF or some other things I need. I don't think I need eye controled focus which so many people are excited about though I'm not sure why. I guess I'm disappointed in the price too. I think all these cameras are too expensive and the price needs to come down.
As for the new 1 series camera you mentioned, I don't need 10 fps or even 8fps (5 or 6 is fast enough for me). What I do want/need is an extremely well built and great high resolution camera I can use in the studio and outside. I'd like to see a new processor; digic 3 or whatever, a bigger LCD screen, a resolution boost, better batteries, and most importantly I'd like to see the price of the new 1 series drop to $5K (or less).
In short, I hope Canon does something else because it looks like if you're right I'm going to be one of the few people disappointed with this PMA. I sure hope you're wrong, because I'm underwhelmed with what Canon has been offering lately.
These lenses have more range and the latter has a faster aperture as well. That means that if such lenses will ever be produced they will be a lot more expensive.
I find it hard to believe.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the 16-35mm that's been out for a while is the replacement for that lens.
I'd love to see a reasonably priced ultra-wide prime. A 15mm or 16mm f/3.5 priced in the consumer range would be fantastic for 20D and Rebel XT owners.
The 16-35L, which came out in Dec '01, is the replacement for the 17-35L, which came out in Apr '96. The 17-40L, on the other hand, came out in May '03, after both of the lenses.
It's always great to have lens upgrades as it will benefit everyone. If the 17-40L does get replaced, our copies will still be able to produce wonderful photos!
In short, I hope Canon does something else because it looks like if you're right I'm going to be one of the few people disappointed with this PMA. I sure hope you're wrong, because I'm underwhelmed with what Canon has been offering lately.
Jim
I sure hope he's wrong too for pretty muuh the same reasons
Eye controlled AF - not interested.
30D not interested (insignificant upgrade)
1D range - too expensive
what deos interest me is weather sealing, a mirror lock up button instead of print button (and possibly more MPs) on the 5D
