I used a top light through a red gel above only the beans. I used a piece of black paper over everything behind the gel to keep the background dark.
The beans were sittings on a window screen. A piece of black paper was laid behind the beans and extended upward to create the seamless background.
I used a very small flashlight shining toward the camera at an angle to get the smoke to be white, otherwise it was very red and I didn't like it. I then lit a piece of paper, blew it out, and let the smoke rise through the screen and beans.

Thats some hot coffee. The gel adds to the effect. It makes the beans appear as though they are being roasted. Also love the way you have composed this photo.
This one is neat. I think I saw a lot of the others in the previous coffee weekly assignment we had, so the smokin beans are a welcome surprise. Also the execution is above me. My house would be a smoldering pile if I had attempted this.
Excellent capture Scott, you can almost smell the roasting coffee beans. Great variation from all the other coffee cup shots! Your setup worked 100%, congratulations!
