Just got my new Brightscreen p222 (center microprism only - for 1D series), and installed it in my 1DsII without the shim. Focus is perfect - dead on!
Mike,
I just got mine as well, same screen I think (large center microprism). I had to install the shim on my 1ds2.

I'm still waiting for mine to arrive. I received shim2, but not the micoprism only version which BS was going to send in replacement of the split-microprism. (for 5D)

I've been following this thread with some interest. It sounds like the new shims have solved everything (?), just wondering if anyone can confirm if the #5 (split + microprism) screen works as advertised with the 5D?
From the looks of it a lot of people switched from the #5 screen to the #2 screen (microprism only).

Wheaty,
One of the reasons was that the split prism + microprism collar screen was thought to be a bit cluttered by some, and the consensus was that the Proscreen (large microprism only) provided more accurate focussing over a greater variety of subjects. hth, kl

Paul,
I received it a few days ago but have very little time at the moment. I did a few tests however and it for sure is an improvement. It is too early to say if it solved all problems but will come back on that.
I prefer the microprism only version, wouldn't recommend the combined with split-screen.
I had the impression the new microprism only screen was a tad bigger than the earlier, but I could fit it finally. One side was a bit roughly cut off.
But please wait for my final conclusions.
Regards,
Hans

Your comment about one side being roughly cut bothers me in the sense of...
Did this one slip through Qaulity Control or is this the normal case? Any others notice this? For the price I would expect a very polished and sophisticed lens.

Just a quick update... I've been using the p222 on my 1DsII (with no shim) for about two weeks now, and I've VERY happy with it. It's an absolute joy to use.

I'm about ready to give up on manual focus...shot about 30 oil paintings using manual focus and the brigthtcreen microprism. looked at in the computer, they were all out of whack.
5D, 24-105, f11, studio flash.
got breeze-browser, downloader, tethered the camera, looked at previews and
re-shot the next day using standard screen and autofocus, much better. problem is, there is not sufficent contrast in the art for a/f to work, so I have an assistant hold a piece of newsprint on the art, I a/f, move the newsprint and then shoot. PIA.

Hi John,
I was getting back focus with my 5D and the Brightscreen split image screen so I ordered a Canon Ee-S screen thinking it would solve my manual focusing problems. A quick test though showed that my 5D sample back focuses with that screen too so it looks like, at least in my case, it's not a Brightscreen problem. I've sent my body back to Canon service and asked them to check the factory shim pack that sets the screen location . I'll let the group know how it works out.

I finally had some time to test, and the microprism-only version with shim seems to work now. I had only time to test it on 1 lens, and it wasn't the ideal lens to test with (24-105mm f4).
Next week I'll do some more testing with other lenses and let you know.
I can't say it's very easy to focus very accurately, but at least it works this time.

Recieved my #2 large microprism spot center for my 5D. Initial impressions are very impressed with manual focusing of wides like Olympus 21/3.5, 28/2... (outside shooting).
I am concerned about the darkness around the spot during low light indoor shooting. I wasn't counting on the area around the spot to be so dark. The spot is nice and bright, but for focus/recompose shots, it may be difficult to see if focus shifts (especially for narrow dof use). I will do more testing.
