p.3 #13 · Microprism-only Brightscreen on Canon 5D | |
Brightscreen is demonstrating outstanding customer service with this issue. Here's an email I received from Jim...
Mike,
Sorry for the confusion of camera types.
We have found shimming problems with the 5D cameras also. There are many issues we are addressing now. We have found manufacturing differences with the 5D cameras which have contributed to many unforeseen circumstances. In brief, we are resolving all issues now with different remedies to correct any and all issues. The majority of 5D cameras should not require this new shim, however we are producing these now to include with all future orders and these will also be sent to all consumers as soon as possible.
Hope this helps and again we apologize for your inconveniences,
Jim Lakey

Hi Jim,
Thanks for your reply.
Mine is not a 1D series camera – it is a 5D. Does this same issue apply to the 5D cameras and screens?
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mr. Hatam,
Most of our time to date recently has been consumed with regular business and R&D production with screens for the 5D cameras.
We have now however just determined that a shim is necessary for the 1D series cameras. We have now discontinued shipments of the 1D screens until we can manufacture a shim to include with all 1D series screens. We will recall all screens which have been shipped for the 1D screens to date and or, also offer an option to await the shim to be forwarded as soon as possible.
Shims could be ready as soon as next week, however we are quoting an estimated date of 14 to 21 days. In addition to shims, we are also planning to release a series of masks designed to project different aspect ratios later in January or February.
You may choose to await receipt of the new shim, return your screen for a full refund including shipping charges and or, choose an extended 45 day return privilege for a full refund. We apologize for your inconveniences and will await your reply.
Kind regards.

Subject: Problem with my Brightscreen
Hi Jim,
I received my Brightscreen (Canon 5D – large micro-prism-only version), and have been using it for 4 days now.
I am having problems with it – it is consistently front-focusing. In other words, when the image in the view-finder is crisp and clear at the center of the screen, and I take the picture, in the resulting image the area behind the center is in focus, but the center is out of focus.
I have re-seated my screen a dozen times, being very careful to make sure everything is correct. I’ve adjust my diopter setting, and calibrated it. I’ve performed numerous controlled tests to double, triple, quadruple-check my results. The results are consistently front-focused.
I’m am not having these issues when I switch back to my Canon screen, which can only lead me to believe that it is an issue with my Brightscreen.
What do you suggest I do? The screen is not usable for me with this performance. Do you think I may have a defective screen?
Thanks,
Mike
