I'm in a similar situation and I'm thinking the same. Take your widest lens.

Sure. But just for fun leave the lens at home.

I take my camera with a few lens everywhere I go. Some people think I am nuts, but after a while, they get used to it.

Camera bag goes everywhere with me. Before I really became interested in getting semi skilled at photography, there were far too many times I saw somethng and thought, "that would make a beautiful photo"

I never leave my "tools" at home because you never know when the opportunity to "work" may occur.

How do you do it with a 20D and a few lenses? I can do it with my FM2n and one lens attached to it, but have yet to come up with a convenient way to do it with my 20D.

20D, 17-85 IS, 70-300 IS. That works for me. Never leave home even to go to Walmart without them. Heck I bring them with me to check the mail.

Better to have and not need than to need and not have.

I just bring my camera and the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 now. Minimalist.

I just picked up FujiFilm's F10 digital camera today though for the significant other. I may try to use that more often for social settings, as even my minimalist setup draws too much attention sometimes.

Well....I went to two parties tonight. One with the kids and one without. My wife said I shouldn't bring the camera to the first party (kids) but bring it to the second. Well, she was wrong about both. Dang. At least there is always tomorrow. Happy New Year!
