With regard to CMOS vs CCD, I prefer the CMOS for two reasons
1) Battery Consumption: I notice a huge difference in battery life between my 1D and my 1Dmk II
2) Image Quality: Although the CCD images are sharper straight from the camera, they also suffer from artifacts. The 1D is VERY prone to Moire patterns. These patterns show up all the time in everyday shooting.
1) could have to do with any number of factors. Comparing two Nikon CCD cameras (D100 and D70), the D70 gets much better battery life at the same resolution, with the same battery. Chalk it up to progress.
2) has nothing to do with the type of chip, and everything to do with the glass anti-aliasing filter on top of the chip.

All that Canon have said is that they (1) will drop 1.25 crop from the 1 series and (2) they intend to move towards 1.0 crop for all but their low end models. Nothing their says that a 25/30D can't have 1.25 crop.
Except for logic...
This is a debate that is starting to smell bad, the dead horse really needs to get burried as it's starting to rot.
Why on earth would canon make it's consumer cameras a 1.3 crop when they've convinced all thier customers to buy these lenses that will only work on a 1.6 crop?
Furthermore, why on earth would they release a 1.3 crop, 10mp camera when they just released the 5D. I really dont think too many people would spend twice as much money for a little bit larger of a sensor.
It's the same thing that we've been reading for years now, people want a 1D but they dont want to pay for it. It aint gonna happen folks...

Why on earth would they state that everything but the bottom end models would eventualy be 1.0 crop and why would their support of EF-S be so limited if it were not just a stop-gap solution? EF lenses work perfectly well on 1.0, 1.25 and 1.6 crop and most 1D series owners have little issue with using them on 1.25 crop

Why would anyone buy a 1Ds rather than a 1D? More M pixels and a smaller crop factor are the only advantages that the 1DsII has over the the 1DII. People still pay more than double for them.

If you think that the 1D is only about 1.25 crop and resolution then you are sadly deluded. A 20D sized body with 10M pixels, 5fps, 1.25 crop, 9 point AF and no weatherproofing or spot metering is enough short of the 5D not to kill it's market.
I have no ideas why someone would change over.
Having looked at those test shots that where posted in the Nikon forum i was a bit disappointed in the D200's performance after reading all the hype on the boards.
Here was i thinking this thing is as good as my 1Dmk2N.
Sorry.
Less resolving power, more noise and poorer image quality left me thinking it better have a lot of features because looking at those shots showed me Nikon's image quality is still behind Canons.
And the test was done my Nikon.

At the price point of the future 20D, they really can't up the features/build too much, or they will start stepping on the toes of the 5D at twice the price. This will be a very interesting next couple of months.
No I entirely disagree. The price is not the indicator in this case. The 20D/30D(?) target and intended use are not the same as the 5D. There is world of difference between a 1.6c crop camera and FF camera IMO, and I think Canon will deliver the best camera it can at the $1500 price point with little regard for the 5D. Look as a consumer class camera you will find that the specs won't go much higher than the 5D anyway, but that the MP count could easily hit 12 if Canon can provide as good a ISO performance of the current 20D and maintain 5fps. Canon will never match the Nikon's for features IMO but will prefer to push the image quality. However, they no longer have such a huge lead in this area that they can sell on this point alone and they should offer a few more improvements over even what the 5D offers.

The only objection I have to this is that for my needs, image quality has already "jumped the shark". I dont need more megapixels, and can live with the noise of the D200 because it has features that I need/want over the D70 that have no relation to image quality if you were to shoot test shots, but when out and shooting, make a world of difference. Things like the 5fps, improved autofocus, flash metering, improved Matrix meter, ditching the mode dial, etc are all way more important than resolution. Of course id like to have less noise and better dynamic range and 1/500th sync, but like everything in life, compromise is the name of the game
It sounds like a great camera with really nice features. Unfortunatly it still uses a 1.5X sensor that is made by Sony. Another Porsche with a VW engine.
Ooooor,....they Canon can come out with an 8.2MP camera that has slightly upgraded features like the 2.5" LCD.. and a larger buffer for raw & jpg, and that direct printer button thingy,... while keeping the rest of it spec'ed as it was before for the most part,...still keeping it without a spot meter, or weather sealing which most of it's owners don't need in the first place...(besides, you can get an all weather cover made just for the 20D for under 40 bucks)......and introduce the price of this upgraded 20D body lower than 1,300.00...........while the "flagship" 1Ds camera gets an upgrade to say,.....22 + change MP,....and then the 1D camera get a 12.8MP FF chip and then, you can move on up the lower end bodies to have much more improved features...(think EOS 1, EOS 1n, and EOS 1V...the EOS 1N was the pickle in the middle before the vastly improved 1V was introduced....and then look what was introduced, an EOS 3 body, that nearly killed the 1N in every feature aside from sync speed and mirror coverage.....and the A2 was finally discontinued,.....you see,...Canon had to "make room" for the 3 )........while at this time,...Nikon will be suffering from the usual....."what do we do, what do we do".. ....and don't answer for another year afterwards..while the leap frogging continues..
Regardless of my reputation being the "Beerboy" on Dpreview,....please don't feed into this too much... these are simply my personal observations..
Bottom line,.....there will never be an "end all".... there will always be something new coming out.......so,....just keep what you have, make money with it...because we have gotten to that point where the latest & greatest products are splitting the hairs of the last former latest greatest stuff.. For most of the world,...who doesn't order prints larger than 8x10,....how "overkill" can you go before you realize that you didn't really need all that to accomplish making that 8x10 look nice..? Or, that pictures sized for the internet website?
Now, go take some nice pictures with which ever camera or system you have!
