because they are different designs - cost is no issue here - they're both in the same "segment", but different designs. It's like comparing apples and bananas...
Ghosts like that appear with all lens designs - more or less.
You may exchange it in a new one, but I doubt you'll see much difference - after all, canons CC isn't that bad.
Good news, I exchanged the lens today. I made some shots in the sun earlier today and again this evening, and the difference is significant, even when I "went looking for trouble" shooting with the sun smack on the corner of my viewfinder. This evening I went back to the same locations I shot the previous nights. I am now a happy camper. I can tell I'm really going to enjoy this new lens, finally!!!
By the way, I bought the lens at Samy's in Santa Ana, California. Ken the dealer I usually work with was great, no problems at all exchanging the lens, he was very helpful, great guy to do business with.
Glad you satisfied with the lens. Before I was worried about this flare problem too. I got my lens 4 days ago and "went looking for trouble" shooting directly to the sun or light the past 2 days. Can't find any problems. =)
It is amazing to me by the amount of posts on this thread how many people would have actually accepted a flawed lens. It is not the first time I buy something defective, thankfully I got it exchanged with no problems or hassles. I'm glad you are enjoying your lens, I really do like this new lens very much, it's a keeper.
