You're right. And it is a sleeper. Very sharp, very wide, and surprisingly good in terms of flare. There's a reason that Canon hasn't upgraded this lens for a good while - they don't want to mess with a good thing.
I second 24mm f/2.8. Especially for film and full framedigital.
Focuses very close and gives wonderful here-to-infinity
pictures. Looking for similar (light and compact replacement
for 1.6x digital camera. *sigh*
My first vote is for the 50mm F1.8. Its cheap, small, super lightweight (especially the mark II) and performs well in low light. What I like best about this lens is the close focusing distance which makes it truly a gem when working intimately with your subjects.
My next vote would be for the 85mm F1.8. Slightly bigger and heavier, but still makes stunning images.
I thought we were talking about 'sleeper lenses'. Most of these mentioned are not sleepers. I think the 28-105 cheapie plastic and the 20-35 non L are two real sleepers. When you hear people talk about sharp lenses, you do not hear those two mentioned.
