p.8 #1 · Zeiss/Oly -> 5D Compatibility List

I posted before in this thread that I had started the process of converting this page and putting it up on my Canon Wiki:
http://iso-100.com/canonwiki/index.php?title=Zeiss_/_Olympus_5D_Compatibility_List

Any of you are welcome to either continue the conversion or add new information as you discover it. It's a wiki... so anyone may edit!

The problem is, it isn't a binary yes/no ... for example, some 5D's don't have mirror clearance issues with the Son adaptor but others do ... or ... some users report inf focus ok with Shell adaptor and others do no. And this isn't the only important thread on this subject. There have been several others in the past 3 months that actually had more useful information.

If any does a web site with a table, I would recommend making it very clear that the results people are getting are not consistent and only some users have reported success with those combinations, but others have not.

What might be more helpful people is a recommended process to go about finding the right adaptor with all the links and technical info ... which lens usually work better with thinner adaptors ... which are the thinner adaptor ... how to test inf focus ... what to watch for with mirror clearance ... how the calibration of the lens effects performance ... maybe a blurb on the new chip adaptors

Jon... feel free to start a new page or even add to the bottom of the current one.

I don't have any non-Canon lenses (other than Hartblei) on my 5D, so I have nothing to add here. I just felt it was important information that would be good to place on a web site...

Hi!

It would be great for this topic to be put in sticker mode again; anyway I've the possibility to make a dedicated web page on my server space and I'll put it online as soon as possible. Give me about 48 hours!

Ciaoooo!!!

Emanuele, I take it you don't want to just contribute to the Wiki I've already started?
http://iso-100.com/canonwiki/index.php?title=Zeiss_/_Olympus_5D_Compatibility_List

Just click "Edit" on the page and update the table. It's really that easy. I guarantee it takes less than 48 hours! ;-)

Hi VaRiX,

don't let me wrong, your idea about Wiki is great and I did consider it.
Anyway I'll develop the page on my own space because for me it's like to be at home: I've direct control over it and I can assure that it will be always on.
I like your suggestion too and I'll update the list on Wiki ASAP! This way we'll have a double on-line easy-to-access resource. I've said that it'll take about 48 hours only because I'm VERY busy at work, NOT for technical reasons.

Again, your idea is just great!

Ciao!

Emanuele

Thanks Emanuele... when you're done, or have something online, we'll exchange links. Google likes to see cross-references.

Thanks Emanuele for the valuable information. Can the adaptors be classified to fit Ultra Wide-Angles, 35mm-100mm, 135mm and above? I heard the the thickness of adaptor varies from 1.5mm to 1.65mm. The thinner adaptor shall get infinity focus but may hit the mirror, is that correct?

I got a Made-in-China Adaptor with focus indicator chip. It works great on 350D and I want to test it on my friend's EOS5D.

I have got a D18/4 s/n 6000xxx AEG version, and want to know whether it can clear the mirror without losing Infinty focus with a 1.5mm adaptor.

Is there any way to protect the glass from being scratched beside Mirror-Lock-Up? I'm also worried about my D35/1.4, did anyone got any painful experience b4?

Thanks to everyone for all the info - what a terrific resource.

I just received a Cameraquest adapter a few days ago for my new EOS 5D.
Here are the preliminary results for mirror clearance with my Zeiss lenses:

15mm f/3.5 Distagon AE does not work - hit metal part around rear element.
18mm f/4 Distagon MM - didn't even attempt this.
28mm f/2.8 Distagon MM works.
45mm f/2.8 Tessar MM does not work - works at close focus, hits mirror at infinity.
50mm f/1.4 Planar MM works.
85mm f/1.4 Planar MM works.
100mm f/2.0 Planar MM works.
100mm f/2.8 Macro Planar AE works.
100mm f/4 S-Planar & bellows works.
180mm f/2.8 Sonnar MM works.
300mm f/2.8 Tele-Apotessar AE works.

I haven't properly tested the focusing on all of these, but the initial shots look good at a glance.
I did some shooting with the 100/2.8 Makro-Planar and the image quality is excellent.

Is there any hope for the 15mm Distagon? I would love to mate this with the 5D.

thanks!

Michael

David from down under

The 18mm AE will work with the 5d but you need a thinner adapter than 1.5mm. It is possible that the lens rear protection will hit the mirror though, glass and mirror won't damage (unlike the MM version)
the 35 1.4 needs the mirror to be shaved, here the glass might get scratches, there is no protection

My 35/1.4 works fine

I guess I was lucky I only did a visual check before mounting. Was using a fotodiox adapter.

Good for you, is it sharp at infinity at f1.4?

Michael,

Thanks for the report: a fabulous C/Y array! Do you find any marks or gouges in the 5D mirror box? In particular, the P100 has a substantial "shark fin" that has marred my old D30. Also significant, the fin will force the lens to sit askew on the mount, visibly tilting the image plane. I saw this effect on the P100 and SP60.

I think so. My only test when I first got it were some trees about 200' away.

But I was expecting it to work based on this thread...

Rico,
Yes, indeed I have a very thin relief that has been carved into the 5D mirror box.
I perceived the P100 to be a little tighter than the other lenses and this explains it.
I even discovered a super thin curl of black plastic material that had been removed by the fin.
I can't see that the lens sits askew on the camera, but the images seem soft, and this lens is anything but soft on my Contax bodies. Thanks for the input.

I also noticed significant vignetting with the P50/1.4 wide open.

Michael
