p.3 #1 · Zeiss/Oly -> 5D Compatibility List

Howard; on my 5D the Zeiss 28 did not clear the mirror. I removed the three screws by the rear element and ground down that plastic collar surrounding it; to the same height as the adapter rim. I also ground down the fin to the same height. Shaving the fin only did not fix it. Now it works like a charm, as it should.

It is easy to remove the rim and you can do a better job with it removed and you won't have any plastic debris finding its way in to the optics.

I use the Cameraquest adapter for it.

regards, Henrik

Hi,

So far no one has mentioned about "CZ Plannar 1.2/50".

You have to file down "aperture level protector" at least 0.3mm in order to mount
it to 5D, that "protector" interfares with the electoric contacts on any EOS camera
body, otherwise you do not need to modify anything else.

FWIW, the Peleng 8mm fisheye does not work on the 5D. It comes from Kiev Camera with an EOS adapter of sorts and there is a protrusion on the rear element that collides with the mirror. An aweful lot of vignetting too.

So if one tries one of these lenses and the mirror hits it will that cause any damage? Obviously, I am not talking about doing it repetitively...just wondering if you try it and the mirror doesn't clear properly if you could damage the camera in any way?

Go see this:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/292899/1

I sanded down an adapter for my 4/18AE until it hit the mirror just once. On the second try it did not anymore hit the mirror. After 50 shots, now there is a little scratch on the lens mount, visible only against the light. On the 5D mirror there is a sign too, looks more like you just had scratched it with your fingernail.

The lens performs o.k. goes to infinity now and is better than my former 16-35L.

Has anybody tried a CZ15mm with a DSLXchange adapter, the DSLX adaper positions the lens on a slight angle vs the Cameraquest and I am wondering if that is enough to clear the mirror?

Any comments in regards to the DSLX adapter and a 5D appreciated...

Andy

If it is not dead-on facing upright, it probably is sitting too far away from the film plane for infinity focus. The CZ15 is one of the more challenging lenses to adapt, but everybody here seems to have done it successfully with all the info that gets posted. No way to tell about the mirror as its placement seems to vary from one unit to the next. One user has two 5Ds, and his CZ15 clears on one body, but not the other.

Hi there!

I finaly have a 5 D. So i did some lens testing today with my Zeisses.
I guess i have some of the lesser wanted glass, so i can probably add to this compability list a bit:

For now i only have two cheap ebay/Fotodiox adapter. So the following results are all for the
Fotodiox adapter type:

16mm / 2,8 AE works
25mm / 2,8 AE works
35mm / 1,4 AE works
50mm / 1,7 AE works
85mm / 1,4 AE works
180mm / 2,8 AE works and the finn (quite long) does not have to be shaved
35-135mm / 3,3-4,5 MM works

I got such great information from this forum, thank you all! I may post some pictures of my testing later on.

Hi John,

surprisingly, I have been able to get infinity focus from my CZ15 with both the DSLX and CQ adapters. I would say that the CQ is a little better at infinity with this lens, but it is very very close, I was wondering if the slight tilt on the DSLX adapter would allow the 5D mirror to clear without modification - I am assuming that the mirror hits the pins at the botton of the lens??

Well, one should not be to quick with conclusions: The mirror gets stuck when shooting the 16mm Fisheye - but only sometimes
I have to pull the lens slightly away from the body to allow the mirror to snap free.
This happens about once in ten frames. Guess i need a different adapter after all.

I am also not able to reach infinty focus with the 35mm/1.4 when the F-stop is below 5.6 with my cheap ebay adapters.

OT: Im looking for two adapters for my 1Ds - if you have a high-quality adapter that doesnt work for your 5D combo, visit my Buy/Sell ad. It has to infinity focus though - I shoot at infinity 99% of the time. Email or PM me do not reply here. Thanks -Paul

I did not see the cz 40-80/3,5 and the 70-210/3,5 on the list. I had no issues at all with them using the same adapter as for the 28/2,8

Have anyone of you tried 60mm 2.8 macro planar yet. Does it hang on mirror?

No problem with if and mc. The fin of that lens might scratch the inside of the camera. Search the forum, there is already lots of info about it.
The lens is excellent!

I am writing about it on my webblog right now: http://eskelinen-haili-helenius.blogspot.com/ Sorry about blogs native language. You can see something from pictures still.

I am just too chicken to give it a try. What do you mean about scratching? If it makes contact to somewhere... how does it not affect to mirror and it's operation? Is there any possibilities to do some machinery to fin without changing it's operation on Contax bodies? Why this fin is actually there and why it differs from other Contax CZ models so much?

read this! you are not the first to ask the fin question. I shaved that thing a bit, this is one solution, others just leave it there and let it scratch.

sorry for digging up old dirt, but i cant find any answers.

I wanted to get the Zeiss 28 f/2.8 for my 5D, is there any adapter that allows proper clearance? and infinity focus? as far as ive seen in images the rear element doesnt protrude THAT much. or would i bet better off saving for that 1ds and 21mm distagon ?

and - i dont mind spending a little extra if i know the adapter works properly.

Abramg,

My 5D does hit the mirror with the 5D using a good quality chineese adapter and it focusses on infinity. In my casde 5 minutes with a Dremel tool and removing the paint the on tupper part of the lens was enough.

Do not believe what is written about the 5D, many examples will hit the mirror on the way down and need to be fixed. But its so easy and it still works on a Contax so what is the problem?

And if iIcompare the Canon 28mm to the Zeiss - game over Canon and its easy to see the difference in an A4.

Zeiss Service Info

Go to this link. http://www.zeiss.com/C12567A8003B58B9?Open

Go to "Service and Maintanance", then to "Function Test". They have a "Test Cover Letter" linked as a download for you to fill out. I have them do their 7 Point Function Test as described on the web site. The cost is 49EU. If you decide to only do the test itself, you pay the 49EU. If you proceed with their recommended repairs, such as cleaning, mechanism adjustments, etc, that 49EU gets applied to that repair. They also have a link to a cover letter for a specific repair, if that is all you want done.

The service contact is:

Hi,

I took a quick look at the lst to see if the Olympus 21mm 3.5 lens was compatible with the 5D. It says 'mirror clearance ok' but it is also suggested to have a look at the link . I cannot get the link to work.

Is there any other vital info I am missing out on?

Many thanks.
