No flare yet. Will send in next year after the holidays. Why not? It's a free upgrade and will add value.

Previously I couldn't get the flare in the sun or with artificial light then I learned how to get it using artuficial light at the proper angle and very cose to the source.

I couldn't re-try it in the sun since it's been raining for the last couple of days. But this morning it was clear so I tried again and eventually was able to capture the flare with the sun.

Once I learned what to look for in the viewfinder it was easy. I found the "heavenly light" flare can't be see in the VF in daylight but when there is large, thin, curved flare seen in the opposite side of the VF as the sun (sun out of frame) the flare was captured.

I've seen some call the lens the "Photon Torpedo" but I prefer "Lens Of Heavenly Light"

I wonder if Canon will have anything to say this week?

Date Code: UT0801
Serial #333059

I have taken close to 500 photos in all lighting conditions and have not encountered the flare. I have tried to reproduce it, but no luck yet. This is not to say it's not there, only that I haven't been able to find it.

Perhaps Canon could "fix" this problem by making it appear in the viewfinder. Then at least we'd have the choice ...

I suspect that it relates to reflections off the sensor and lens coatings - otherwise, it would be visible in the viewfinder.

Sorry for my ignorance, but where is the Date Code on this lens - I can't seem to find it.

So far, no sign of the flare.

Serial No. 297233

it has nothing to do with the sensor. i eyeballed it through the eyepiece before the shot was taken. this is not a ghost that shows up after the shot is done.

I can see flare in my viewfinder at a 45 degree angle & f4 @ 24mm. But like RJJR, I wonder if it's much of a problem, because I have an aversion to shooting that way.

333xxx - & I was surprised to find no date code!

PS, I hope duct tape isn't the fix that Canon has in mind.

SN: 296716
Date Code: UT0600

This lens was one of the first copies shipped in the US and I do have problems with flare. I just used it on a 2 week trip to France where I took thousands of pictures with it. The flare only shows up in pictures with a bright light in, or just outside the frame but it badly washes out any pictures taken under these circumstances. However, this was only the case for a few of the pics I took on the trip and the problem is completely offset by the convenience of IS in the thousands of GOOD pics. Love this lens. I still may have Canon repair it if they have a fix eventually though.

It's a white stamp on black plastic, on the lens mount.
