p.1 #1 · Dropped 1Ds, what to expect from service?
So, my 1Ds took a tumble, guess it was just a matter of time. Other than a couple extremely minor marks on the corner of the camera it looks perfect still. The upper left controls no longer function, nor does the back screen power on or function. The focusing screen bounced out during the fall, but seemed to go back in cleanly.
Other than this the camera appears to be functioning fine (better than the 50mm up front, that's for sure). It's stuck at ISO 100, as the controls don't work, and I can't review, but it is still acting like the soldier it is.
Has anyone repaired a 1 series in a condition like this? What will the wolves at Canon service take out of my wallet?

Well, it actually did really well. The camera was in an unpadded backpack, inside a thin neoprene case, and tumbled down a 1000 foot 40 degree couloir, bouncing on scree and talus until it took the final plunge off a 70 foot cliff. Power to the 1Ds.
Oh, I have a rebel on the way for the next adventure. Can't afford it any more!

Wow... and it still functions!! I would consider yourself pretty luck if all that's bad are some electrical connections. I bet all Canon needs to do is open it up, reseat some connectors.... if so, i wouldn't cost that much I think. Be sure to include the picture of the mountain...

That was one hell of a fall. Like others have said Canon should be paying you for advertising. I hope you sent the same picture to them showing how it fell. I am amazed it was still in one piece let alone worked.

Canon's rates are something like $180 flat fee for labor plus parts. $400 to $800 sounds like a resonable guess. If you want external parts replaces for cosmetic reasons, that will probably get very expensive.
