as a fellow camera dropper - soon to be inducted as an Olympic discipline and I think you take the cake here!
Mine only dropped 6 feet and got a few dents broke the lens off (rip 24-70) but pulled the lens mount off and mounted another lens and we were up and running again :-)
but 1000 feet! damn....pardon my english but that is blo*dy amasing. I hope you get it fixed, but I think you are looking at a bigger repair bill

Nick, you were lucky you didn't go with it. You wouldn't have fared nearly as well like your 1Ds. I am sure 1 series users all expected something like this might happen when they purchased the camera.

I saw your picture (of the mountain) and had to wonder what was so interesting that you would risk dropping anything? Its all a bunch of rocks and seen one you've seen them all, it would seem to me.
Nothing really worth taking a tumble over, right? Now if there was a girl involved...

Bob, your 1.4x was *not* in the bag. :-) There was a 17-40L that held up no problems, attached to the body. The 50/1.4 works fine but seems a little rattly? Was it like that before, I can't remember.
Actually, not to drag out this thread, but the most amazing part was the gitzo 1128 strapped to the OUTSIDE of the pack! Seriously scratched up, and the little plastic platform at the top is snapped, but functionaly it's still 100%. I don't think I'll be ever selling that one now.

That is an impressive fall and outcome! Hurrah for Canon!
Worst I've had is dropping my 1Ds (mark 1) with a 50mm macro lens attached about three feet onto asphalt. It landed on the lens cap, which was driven into the lens and can't be removed. The 1Ds was fine, and I removed the 50mm lens, substituted another, and continued with the shoot.
