The seller only accept moneyorder/cashier check. He does not want to go through paypal. His EBAY's ID is "prosport1". But his ebay account had been suspended. I am interest in his lens, but I am worry about "moneyorder/cashier check only". Anyone has any sugession ?
I contacted this same person about the EF 70-200mm f2.8L he has for sale on photo.net for $750. He gave an address in Oregon to send the money order to, but in an earlier discussion thread on the same site, he said he lived in Las Vegas.
He told me he was travelling in Oregon, but I wasn't too comfortable about the circumstances, and decided not to go through with the transaction.
He also gave me the address in Oregon. I replied back and ask him to give me his home address and phone# (I am not sure if this will help). I am waiting for his reply. Does anyone know how to verify someone name and address, phone number online ?
Wow that is a great deal. I would buy it too. Does the store you bought the lens from has more than one bang up lens ? Let me know if you want to sell your lens.
Thanks everyone for your input. I think I won't take a chance. I will save my hard earn money for the Canon 24-70mm lens instead.
A guy at work was recently ripped off on photo.net by someone in washington state, and partially because he did no homework and asked no questions other than "where do i send the money".
I had replied to the same bunk seller before he did, but asked a few questions, and he never replied to me.
I am not saying photo.net is a bad place to do business, i have bought many items there, including a lens and an eos 1D since my friends incident, but you have to check things out.
Hey all--Wow, hope I didn't infer that I was endorsing this deal!! I just happened to see it and thought I'd share information. I just bought this lens a couple of weeks ago and thought "this could be a good deal." Perhaps not! Glad to see the wariness expressed and I appologize if I contributed to an inappropriate sense of safety.
Eric don't be sorry. Actually I contacted the seller about the Canon 300 f4 IS before I even saw your post in this forum. The seller replied back to my email. He gave me his home address, but he said his home phone # is temporary out of service because he will be at his business address for awhile. This sound allitle suspicious. He may be totally honest. But I decide to pass up this deal because of the risk.
All of your comments have made me very apprehensive. Yesterday I sent a cashiers check for $700 - the negotiated price- for the 300mm f/4 IS. I asked for PayPal but he said he didn't like that service. I asked to be called. He did call and we discussed the lens - didn't get his number. I asked him why he was selling off all his Canon 35mm equipment on photo.net. He said because of an opportunity that arose he has gone to medium format exclusively. He said he would send me a tracking number once my check was received - fedEx2 day air.
I will email him and ask for his phone number and for him to answer to these apprehensions
I emailed Jeff Washington and he immediately called me. He gave me his number in Oregon where he is on assignment for a couple of months. He also gave me his permanent address and phone number in Las vegas.
He seems very much honest and straight-forward. So, unless you all have any other info, I will not cancel the deal. I will also post the results of this transaction here. I am concerned that he may get a bad rep on line for no reason.
Does he have more than one of these? If not, he is trying to sell us both the same lens. Everything checked out until I saw your post - then I saw a HUGE red flag.
Regards,
Bryan

WOW!
I also told him I was sending him a money order and he also told me he set it aside for me already. I guess he has 3 or more of them. I had a friend email about it afterward, and he also told my friend it was still available and to send the $800 to Oregon. This was right after he assured me it was "reserved".
It's not worth the risk!
Just so the world doesn't think me a complete idiot, I agreed to buy this lens before seeing this thread.
After talking with one of the other "buyers" here of this lens, I called Jeff Washington and read him the emails he sent two different people saying he reserved the lens for both of us at different times - he said he didn't know how that happened and he must have made a mistake confusing which lens he was selling.
I canceled my purchase and am now having the bank cancel the check.
Thats possible..
Someone has 2 or 3 300mm lenses laying around...
most camera stores don't even have 2-3 300mm/4.0 IS lenses for sale.
At the $700 price.
Goes to show, most people who get ripped off on the interest deserve it.
Everything checked out on this deal - I did a lot investigation. I have purchased a huge amount of stuff from individuals online - deals like this do exist. For example, I purchased a mint Canon EF 300mm f4.0 L for $275 from this forum.
That said I was able to get my money order for this deal out of the mail 10 minutes before the mail carrier arrived. Phew.
BTW - is there anyone in Oregon law enforcement watching? His contact info is:
