p.1 #1 · First Model Shoot (+6 more)

Ok, so this is my first attempt at shooting models - thoughts, comments, criticism, etc. is welcome. I'll be adding more shortly. EDIT: More on page 2

All shot with the 300D and 50mm 1.8.

Special thanks to fellow FM'er Scott Spellman (sspellman) for use of lights, helping organize the shoot, and teaching me a ton of stuff.

First time, it's a good job. Check out what the nose shadow does to the shape of the nose.

Nice photos - #3 looks a little cool to me though.

Anyway, nice job - I love the eyes in #1

#1 i find the shadow of her hair on the right side of her face a bit distracting. same thing with the stray hair in front of her left eye. pretty good lighting though.

#2 could probably use a bit more fill light.

#3 i don't find the light set up very flattering on this one. generally speaking, light coming from the bottom produces a ghost type of image kinda like when you shine a flash light from the bottom of your face. watch the shadow of her nose.

#4 my fave and i think it's the best one, although i don't like the background much because of the line you see above her head.

overall, they're pretty good.

Hey everyone - thanks for the comments, appreciate it.

I think I agree with all the critcism thus far and I will work on correcting my mistakes at the next shoot. I must say though, that as I go through these shots I am quite impressed with the results - imagine if I had one of those fancy 20D's.

Thanks again, and keep the comments coming.

Here are some more.

As for the lighting setup, all shots except for 1 and 2 were done with a single Alien Bee B800 w/ a large softbox. Shots one and two had background light (Alein Bee B400) off to the right. Scott can correct me if I'm wrong on this.

For your first these are very good. On the first group of pictures, I'd say on #1 try cleaning up that stray hair in her face and on the last one in the first clump of pictures a tighter crop on the top would seem to be a little better IMO...maybe even clone the line that is sticking out of her head out.

Aaron-

It was delightful to work with you on Tuesday. Thanks for coordinating the shoot with the models. Katharine, Ashley, and Summer were fun! Here are a few quick shots of mine

Nice shots. She looks like she *really* wants to bust out a big smile but there's something keeping her from doing it.

the shadows in the first set really do change the look of the nose... the look and the shape.

with the 4th picture, compared to the other three, her nose looks a lot smaller, and pretty much a different shape. i guess work with fill flash more.

you did such a great job! impressive. plus, she's a hottie. it helps when the subject is eye-pleasing.

Oh and I gotta add, maybe it's not perfect *ahem* "technique", but I like the fact that her face has some shadow cast by her nose/features - eliminating those features makes shots look boring and flat in my opinion. It gives people that fake look and pushes them one step closer to all looking like the same person. Shadows usually = drama!
