p.1 #1 · Upgrade from 28-80 L to 28-70 or 24 70L worth it?
I'm considering upgrading my 28-80 L F2.8 - 4 to either the 28-70 F2.8L or 24-70 F2.8L. Are these lens worth the extra cost? I plan to buy a used unit which seem to be around $800 to $950. I believe my 28-80 should sell for no less than $500, so is $300 worth the gains?
I prefer to shoot without flash and indoor conditions. I do notice my current lens being a little soft wide open. Has anyone upgraded? and was the difference clear?
Then I read about the new release of the 24-105L F4... but that is too early to debate since it's not released yet.

Tough call. With the 28-80 becoming older they don't seem to get as much as in years past. I think most seem to get about 400-450 (whereas a year ago, 500 was an easy sell). You might get closer to your price on ebay, but then there are added costs involved.
The 28-70 is a great lens, however most seem too close to the price of a 24-70 to be worthwhile. I paid $750 over a year ago for my 28-70 lens, and then sold it about 4 months ago for the same price, when the rebates were abundant, and stepped up to the 24-70. I find it amazing that the 28-70 still seems to get 800-850 now. Strange. With some 24-70's going for 950, I'd say step up to that instead. While almost every 28-70 is equally as sharp as the other, the same consistency doesn't seem to be the case with the 24-70.
Although I'd love to find out how many people are out there with excellent copies of the 24-70, but aren't involved in internet forums to voice their pleasure (or displeasure for that matter).

I have owned 3 28-80 2.8L's, sold each one and regretted it.
Bought a couple 24-80 L's, and had 2 copies that were nowhere near as sharp as my 28-80's.
I currently have another 28-80 that I just bought, and am estastic with it. I think this is one of the most consistant lenses made. Built like a tank, little variation from copy to copy, and a workhorse in the canon line. Thats why I think they still demand a pretty good price compared with the 24-70. Yes the 24-70 has had some great reviews (especially the luminous landscape one comparing the 28-70 to the 24-70- which made me go out and upgrade initially to the 24-70- and I got a not-so-great copy of the 24-70)., but I think for the money the 28-70 is the deal! You can find them for $200 less than the 24-70, and its worth it!

The 24-70 is a terrific lens and has the constant f/2.8 versus your current lens.
If you can wait, I would hold off for a couple of months. I think the used market price will experieince some downward pressure as many people sell their lens to shift over to the new 24-105 IS.
