p.1 #1 · 50mm 1.2 AIS - Part II-

My parents took me to a local Italian restaurant and I got my first chance to test this lens in real world situations.

For those of you looking for a super-fast "normal" lens, I am really liking the images and bokeh of this one. It's built like a tank and is so much easier to focus than the 50mm f/1.8.

All handheld, wide open, manual focused using Canon 10D

Really nice. I'm still amazed at autofocus. It seems foreign to me after all the years of focusing manually.

It's the Nikon 50mm f/1.2 AIS manual focus lens. It's older than I am

I am using a photodiox Nikon to Canon converter, and my 10D. Old with new

Thanks Gary, are you using manual focus with your 20D?

Is it easier to focus than a 1.8 because it's brighter or that the 1.8 has a cheesy manual focus ring? Or both?

I just got the 20D on Saturday. I can barely turn it on.

It is easier than the Canon 50 f/1.8 to focus because a) the focus ring on the f/1.2 is much longer, much easier to precisely focus, b) it's brighter and c) the focus ring is wider/larger so it's easier to turn.

Gary, good luck with the 20D I know how you feel, I went from disposable Kodak cameras to digital so I was totally lost.

Part III - Low light and Squirmy Baby test.

Location - Asian restaurant - candle light

All shots f/1.2, no other way to freeze a squirmy baby in her tracks when the lighting is weak.

Jade those shots are pretty impressive.

Do you happen to have any 100% crops at f/1.2 and 1.4 that you can share? I'm curious with how it performs against the Takumar SMC 50mm f/1.4.

Thanks in advance. .

Thanks Clay. I haven't shot any photos at f/1.4 because I always use the lens wide open. But these are some 100% crops at f/1.2 ISO 400 The ISO 400 is very noisy and 1/50s shutter limits sharpness, but the important part is that the image is captured.

This is a 100% crop, ISO 100, 1/2000s, much sharper.

yikes, that last one looks really sharp. Kind of shocking; I was expecting it to be a bit softer then that.

I guess this means its time to surf ebay.

Thanks for posting these, Jade, you got one killer lens there.

You're welcome Clay, I think that it is sharp enough for my needs. As with all super-fast lenses, it's just a matter of getting the image focused.

Thanks for the comments Makron. I have never used the 50mm 1/4 but I can say that this lens is sharper than my 50mm f/1.8

Hello Daniel, this is a manual focus lens so all shots were manually focused. It's not capable of autofocus.

Jade,

I almost forgot to ask. Does the AI-S lenses have an aperture stop down lever?

I don't know what an aperture stop down lever is, if anyone describes it, I can tell you.

Those are some wondeful pictures. You cerntainly have the talent to use a low light lens. It is a shame that my 85L is always sitting in the bag.
