p.2 #1 · Sigma 10-20 Initial Tests and Sample Shots!!

Interesting samples of the new 10-20. I agree that with the poster who commented that there is no stand out lens in this category.

The Sigma samples too me at least, show pretty good resolution, moderate CA effects and moderate flare effects - which for a lens this wide is pretty darn good. However, I still think that the competition between the Sigma, Canon and Tokina (which I have) is pretty close and photographers probably can't go wrong with any of them.

My take:
Canon:
Pros: future compatibility more likely. 10mm, moderately fast, FTM
Cons: price

Sigma: Pros: 10mm, costs a lot less than the Canon, smallest of the group
Cons: 5.6 at the long end, long end is only 20mm

Tokina: Pros: f4 throughout the range, AF Clutch mechanism, 24mm at the long end, cost
Cons: Largest of the bunch.

Each of them can use filters, which is why I ruled the Sigma 12-24 out.

I went with the Tokina before I had any options - I have a D30 and so can't use the Canon, and the Sigma nor the Tamron wasn't out. That being said, if I had a 20D and was making the choice in the next couple of months, I would go the Tokina again. I like the range as a walk around for street shooting, and like the f4 at the long end for shooting indoors at parties, in pubs, restaurants without flash (Eventually I may go a 20/1.8 for just that purpose, to get away from ISO1600, but that'll have to wait).

PS. For those who haven't read it yet, this thread is superb Post your super-wide shots!

The corners look soft to me on the first shot. Anyone else see the same thing (look at the grass at the bottom right and pavement on the lower left). To be honest though, I haven't done a resolution test on my Canon 10-22 so I don't know if it performs any better...
