Rubber hoods are required at a lot of college/pro basketball games to protect the floor, actually. When you switch bodies, it's hard to put the lens down carefully, and they don't want any smudges or scratches.

Rubber lens hoods are now required when shooting in the NBA. As Brooks said, they mostly protect the floor from scratches,

I was photog at a big party (and well, also visitor, since my regular employer was also my client) and captured this guy with his 40D, EF-s 55-250 IS and 430EX. Pure luck that I caught the flash.

300mm f/2.8L, the tripod collar and foot are in the wrong position for a 200mm f/1.8L
