So you are cooler than him, just because you handhold something that's heavier? Do you think he would use it if he knew he could get just as good shots without it? There is a purpose behind a monopod, which I suppose is, to help getting sharper images under tricky conditions.
The fact that you can handhold a 1-series with a 500mm doesn't really tell us much about your own photographic skills.

You guessed...I was birding...specifically, checking out an Eagle's nest that's quite a ways from the road. Sadly, nothing was on the nest at the time. With that combo I can just about fill the viewfinder with the nest (for those not familiar with Eagles, the nests are rather large).
I only mentioned the combo to show that you can get decent quality photos with stacked extenders.
