I must also admit that I have enjoyed browsing this thread for quite a while. I don't really have any pictures of others using canon, and no one has ever taken a photo of me with my canon, so I took a mirror shot in my bathroom mirror to contribute. Here it is.

Could be the hood that threw you. I have replaced the original hood for my 17-40 f4 also, it now uses the EW-83DII. Works fine on a 1.6x camera, and helps the lens fit into the bag easier.
