Funny - I just checked and there are several online retailers in Switzerland that sell this lens *brand new*. The cheapest price is 5145 Swiss Francs - the equivalent of 4056 US$. It's not in stock but delivery is supposed to be within a week.

Mhm - the lens is not listed on the official Canon Switzerland price list, but it appears on their website without any mention of it being discontinued.

In any case, if it really can be bought new right now, they are legally required to fix it if it breaks...

Slightly odd!

If it cannot be repaired anymore, then it means it cannot break anymore. I say the prices should go up.

I say, stable, then slow decline, like the other classics of their day, but, a little slower decline due to its obvious usefulness.

Can you say "Leiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiica".

The "they have to fix it" thing is the biggest myth circulating on this otherwise myth-free/rumor-free site

Well legislation depends from country to country. Over here, we have an inherent 10 year warranty on a sale, as long as defect is not caused by normal usage.
A producer also has a lengthy period during which he MUST support the product sold.
And this is no myth, just plain law

Sorry for my comment. I should know better by now than to make speculative comments. Consider my comment in error and move on. Sorry Lars.

There are repair shops that will be able to repair till all parts diminish and that is anyones guess when that will be but not anytime soon. I think the biggest worry would be the AF motor but even than that same motor could be in the 300 or something else.

Now new , I don't think so . They have been out of production for awhile now , just don't think anything in a retail shop maybe in someones closet buried by dirty cloths or something.

pretty specialized AF system in this lens Guy , all that focus by wire type stuff

I bet this lens will be repairable for a decade or more at any rate

I think the AF system is the same as the 85/1,2 lens. with electronic focusing method for MF. And the 85/1,2 has the same Ring type USM motor as the 300/2,8 IS. It's called the LI Ring-Type USM.

It makes me wonder if Canon is coming out with 200/1.8L IS line.

That's the rumour. 200 2 IS. I heard it (from someone's brother's sister who had it tentatively confirmed by CPS) on this exact site!

Here we go again

I look at it like this...
In 3 years I will have a 1Ds mkll that I paid $7.5k for that will be worth around $3k. I will have used it and hopefully It will have served me well.
The 200 1.8 which is the ONLY lens I use for my hockey games cost me $4k and someone, somewhere on this planet will be able to repair it even IF it needs to be repaired!!

Hopefully it will have out lived its usefulness to me when the time comes that someone says to me,"you have a wondeful paper weight there!" If not, maybe, just maybe it will be worth half of the 4k I paid, and when I do not use it as much, I can put it on that old 1Ds mkll "backup"

Daniel, that's another great one. I enjoyed seeing your excitement a few weeks back when you got your 200. Since then you've shown what this lens is capable of in the right hands.

Pusan is southeast, I'm northwest. In Seoul. 3 months already? I should buy a calendar!
