Sure was Daniel... really strange (for the UK) the sun was just going down, the Guy at the front is the number 3 ranked wakeboarder in the UK
and he is rather hot at it
and as you can see he is a bit of an ugly young man and has terrible trouble getting a girl friend

Well.... it appears I had a gift from Canon afterall ---- in the form of lots of smears and fingerprints on the front element of my lens. Obviously in the process of determining it was "outside the repair period" they found it necessary to finger the front element.

It really makes one wonder just how friggin careless these guys are at the repair facility. I mean, I've used the lens under various conditions and never once have I had to clean the front element. These guys simply take it out of the lens trunk and have the front element looking like a dog was licking it. And... on the 200/1.8 the front element is recessed a good 1" from the rim of the lens.

There's no excuse for this. Very very disappointing to say the least.

How did the 1" recessed thing happen?

How long ago was this lens discontinued by Canon? I've had 20 year old products repaired by Nikon with no problems. I'm new to Canon and now a little concerned about long term support.

It happened when Canon designed the lens! :-)

I mentioned it because it makes it that much more difficult to get your fingers all over the front element. Still.... Canon managed to get their fingers up there somehow.

As to the concern for parts for this lens and the compatibility of the AF motor with other Canon lenses, I did stumble upon the parts breakdown for the 200 f/1.8 from a link someone posted on the 10D.

I don't have this lens but thought some might be interested in looking at the internals.
