p.1 #1An exciting time in our neighborhood - a Koala visit!
A bit of excitement for us in our neighborhood. A Koala came to visit and was in a large gum tree in a fenced off area across the road for a few days. After a few days, it then came back across the road to be in the tree out the front of my next door neighbors house for a couple of more days! Unfortunately, he was very high up and obscured by branches and leaves so no photos of him there. He has now gone back across the road to the fenced off area and is somewhere well away from the fence in the more deeply wooded area where we can't see him. He is a male as we have heard him make his calls through the night and is obviously out looking for a female mate.
I have rarely ever seen a Koala in the wild as they are difficult to spot way up a tree and they blend in so well. Unless you specifically know where they are you are hard pressed to find them. I have never seen one in suburbia, even though we only live about 300 mts as the crow flies from the bush. Apparently, there is a "colony" of them in the bush near us but I have never seen any even though we have walked many a time there.
Koalas eat a limited variety of Eucalyptus leaves and thus will only be found where these gum trees grow. The leaves are difficult to digest, can be toxic to most other animals and thus Koalas spend around 21 hours sleeping as their body digests these leaves.
It was great to see this fellow and he looks in really good condition, very healthy looking. He has caused a major stir in the neighborhood as most have never seen a Koala in the wild either and lot's of site-seers and photo taking to be had. It was good that he was behind the fence so as to be protected from idiots that might be around as well as dogs etc. Anyway, this first photo is taken from our upstairs window, which was quite dirty as it is hard to get there to clean the out side:

A couple of days later, he climbed down and went to another tree further away.

Wow! Great to see.
(Nice that you have some long lenses handy, too.)
Thank you very much, Steven!
It really is quite an exciting thing to occur, you just don't see Koalas in suburbia anywhere that I know of. It might happen in country areas, but not in a major city like Sydney. I have seen Koalas a few times in the bush well away from cities, but rarely can get a decent photo.
